HELLERTOWN, Pa. – Blake Wisdom pumped in six birdies on the way to a 5-under-par 67, and the Bucknell men's golf team missed out on a playoff by just one shot as Lafayette's ABARTA Coca-Cola Collegiate Challenge wrapped up Monday at Steel Club.
Bucknell closed out the 36-hole tournament with a 285 team score for a 5-over 581 total. Iona and Lafayette both finished at 580, with the Gaels taking the title on the first playoff hole. Mount St. Mary's finished fourth at 588, followed by Rhode Island at 589. There were six Patriot League teams in the field, with Lafayette and Bucknell outpacing Lehigh (595), Navy (604), Colgate (610), and Holy Cross (613).
It was a terrific finish for the Bison, who posted a 3-under team total. Wisdom's 67 was the second-best card in the field all week, and Jason Lohwater also broke par with a 1-under 71. Michael Rudnick fired a 73, and first-round co-leader Jackson Bussell followed up his 69 with a 74 to join Wisdom in the top five on the leaderboard.
Wisdom finished in solo second place with a 36-hole total of 140 (-4), two shots behind winner Justin Burkhamer of Iona. Lafayette's Ryan Tall and Kazuki Osawa both finished at 2-under, and Bussell was one of four players tied for fifth at 1-under.
Wisdom had only one blemish on his card all day, a bogey at the par-3 16th hole. He started the day on the fifth hole and birdied 6, 9, 11, 14, 18, and 3. His 67 is one off his personal best and two shy of the school record. Wisdom shot 66 at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate on Valentine's Day in 2020, and that 6-under total is tied for the school record for low 18 in relation to par.
It was the 25th round of 67 or better in team history, and it was the low round by any Bison this season.
Bucknell's four counting players combined for 17 birdies on Monday, and Lohwater had five of them en route to his 71. It was Lohwater's fourth under-par score in his last seven rounds, and it moved him up 16 places into a tie for 11th.
Bussell began the day tied for the lead with Burkhamer and netted a 74 after posting four birdies and six bogeys. Rudnick knocked nine strokes off his first-round score with a solid 73 that included two birdies and 13 pars.
The Bison are back in action on Apr. 18-19 at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Villanova at Radnor Valley Country Club.
