Bucknell Baseball Falls in First Game to Duke on Friday

DURHAM, N.C. – The Bucknell University baseball team kept things close early on, but the potent offense of Duke found runs in each of the final five innings to pull away for a 17-1 win after an RBI double from Chris Cannizzaro pulled Bucknell within 2-1 in the third.

The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the second inning after a solid start from Ben Magovern, who struck out two batters in the first inning after Duke had two hits in the frame to keep things scoreless.

The Blue Devils capitalized on a walk and a wild pitch in the second, with RBI singles from Andrew Yu and Jonathan Santucci giving Duke a two-run lead.

Sherwin, who hit two doubles on the day for Bucknell's only multi-hit day, hit his first to left field in the third inning with one out, before Cannizzaro followed suit two pitches later to score the sophomore and halve the Duke lead.

However, Duke responded in the fourth, hitting back-to-back home runs after a hit by pitch to open the inning to take a 5-1 advantage. The Blue Devils kept their foot on the gas, scoring at least one run over the final five innings to improve to 5-4 on the season. Duke managed 15 hits in the contest overall.

Bucknell (2-5), accumulated five hits on the day, with Grant Voytovich and Tyler Dunn also hitting safely. Matt Alexander made his collegiate debut for Bucknell in the ninth, entering the game as a pinch hitter.

The Bison will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second game of its scheduled three-game series against the Blue Devils.
