Brendan Lowery Breaks 6-6 Tie in the Seventh with Two-Run Home Run
DURHAM, N.C. – Brendan Lowery's seventh-inning, two-run home run broke open a 6-6 tie, and Graeme Carroll closed the game with a three-inning save as Bucknell defeated Duke for the first time in school history on Saturday afternoon.
Bucknell (3-5), entered the game having lost seven straight to Duke in the all-time series, but prevailed in a close one in Durham for its third win over an ACC school since 2015. The Bison defeated Virginia in 2020, and also defeated Wake Forest during the 2015 season.
Will Greer got the start for the Bison after having an excellent start to the year in allowing just one earned run through his first 15 innings pitched. The junior from Cohasset, Massachusetts faced some adversity early on, as the Blue Devils went yard twice in the first inning on solo shots from RJ Shreck and Chris Crabtree just two batters apart.
Bucknell responded immediately in the second inning when Jacob Terwilliger launched his second career home run over the left field fence on a full count to plate Logan Kellerman, who singled earlier in the inning. The hit for Terwilliger was the second of the season for the Texas native.
Another solo home run by the Blue Devils in the bottom of the inning gave Duke a 3-2 lead, but Greer settled in, retiring six straight Duke batters in the second and third.
The Bison took a three-run lead, its first of the series, in the top of the fourth with four runs. Anthony Sherwin, who knocked two doubles in yesterday's defeat, added one more double to left field in the frame to score Kellerman and Tyler Dunn.
Two batters later, Grant Voytovich rapped another double to left field that scored Sherwin and Kyle Lyons to extend the Bucknell lead to 6-3. The Bison capitalized on an error by the Blue Devils in the inning, with the final two Bison runs unearned.
Duke tied the game in the bottom of the inning with its fourth home run of the game, this time a three-run shot from Damon Lux, to tie the game at six.
Greer remained in the game through the sixth, keeping the Blue Devils off the board through the next two innings while allowing just one baserunner before being replaced by Carroll to start the seventh.
Bucknell broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh, when Jacob Corson, who had a multi-hit day of his own, singled to second base to start the inning. The sophomore was ruled safe at first after a review, setting up Lowery's second home run of the season to left field to put Bucknell up for good.
Carroll proved effective to close the game for the Bison, pitching the final three innings and scattering just three hits over that time span. The Blue Devils managed to get the tying run at the plate in each of the final three innings, but Carroll escaped each situation unscathed in earning his first career save.
Bucknell managed ten hits overall, marking the fourth time this season the Bison have put together ten hits or more in a contest.
Greer (1-0) earned his first win of the season with a final line of six innings pitched, seven hits, and six earned runs with six strikeouts. The six-inning outing marks the third straight start for Greer that he has managed to go at least six innings. Carroll's three innings were the most he has managed in an outing this season, and the two Bison pitchers combined to allow just one walk that came in the ninth inning.
Corson and Voytovich each had multi-hit days, while Terwilliger, Voytovich, Sherwin, and Lowery each had two RBIs in the win.
Bucknell will face the Blue Devils in the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
