LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team defeated Navy 7-2 in its opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Depew Field. The second game of the day was suspended due to lightning with the Bison leading 3-0 in the fifth inning, and that contest will resume at noon on Sunday just prior to the regularly scheduled series finale.
Anthony Sherwin continued his tremendous weekend for the Bison, following up his four-hit effort in Friday's single game with a 3-for-4 performance in game on with three RBIs, including a big two-RBI triple in the fourth inning to give Bucknell a three-run cushion. A 6-for-8 performance from Bucknell's first two hitters in Anthony Sherwin and Chris Cannizzaro helped propel the Bison to a 7-2 win, its second straight over the Mids to start the series.
However, it was the Mids who struck first, scoring the opening run in the first, when Alex Smith hit into a fielder's choice with two outs and runners on the corners that scored Eduardo Diaz.
The Bison responded in the second, when Sherwin singled to open the inning. Cannizzaro then launched his second home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Bison the lead, 2-1.
Navy tied the game at two in the fourth, when Joe Simourian doubled home Zach Stevens. However, the Bison responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame, once again orchestrated by Sherwin. Brendan Lowery started things off with a single before stealing second, followed by a single from Kendall Pierson and a walk from Logan Kellerman to load the bases with one out.
After a pitching change by the Mids, Kyle Lyons brought in Lowery for Bucknell's first run on a sac fly, before Sherwin's deep triple, the first of his career, cleared the bases and gave Bucknell a 5-2 advantage.
Austin Odell earned the start in game one, compiling a complete-game performance on the mound. The senior from Chester Springs, Pa. allowed just two baserunners in the final three innings, and finished the day scattering seven hits with four strikeouts in going the distance for the first time in his career.
Bucknell put the finishing touches on the game in the sixth, when Pierson, Kellerman, and Lyons each singled to start the inning with one out. A fielder's choice from Sherwin helped the sophomore collect his third RBI of the day, before Cannizzaro added his third RBI of the day on a single that scored Kellerman as Bucknell managed five hits in the inning. Sherwin beat out a potential double play ball by the Mids to help keep the inning alive on the fielder's choice.
Bucknell's 6-9 hitters of Lowery, Pierson, Kellerman, and Lyons went a combined 6-for-10 from the plate in the win as the former two each collected multiple hits.
Bucknell will resume its third game of the series at noon tomorrow before finishing the series with a nine-inning contest against the Mids on Sunday approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game three.
