LA VERNE, Calif. – The Bucknell University women's water polo team trailed 6-3 in the first half, but three straight goals from the Bison to end the half, along with the go-ahead goal from distance by Bella Moynihan, helped spark Bucknell to an 11-10 win over La Verne on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bison never trailed after Moynihan's goal at the 3:48 mark of the third, outscoring La Verne by one goal in the fourth, 3-2, to hang on for an 11-10 win, its sixth victory in games decided by three goals or less this season.
The Bison found themselves in a spot of trouble early on, as the Leopards broke a 3-3 tie with three unanswered goals, including a shot to beat the first-quarter buzzer to take a 6-3 lead.
However, Bucknell shut out the Leopards in the second quarter, adding a goal from Paige Furano to pull within two, 6-4, at the half. Chloe Smith and Megan LaCroix then scored one minute apart at the 6:10 and 5:08 mark for the Bison to tie the game. Moynihan capped off the run with a long-distance goal to give Bucknell a lead it would not relinquish. Moynihan added one more goal at the buzzer in the third to respond to a Leopards' goal to give Bucknell an 8-7 lead to start the fourth.
Bucknell held on in the fourth, with Larissa Hodzic and Furano each scoring, the latter adding her second goal of the period in pulling Bucknell away for good with two minutes to go, 11-9. The Leopards scored a late consolation goal, but the Bison managed their second straight victory on its California trip in improving its record to 8-11.
Furano netted a hat-trick in the victory, while Smith continued her strong run of form with two goals. Moynihan and Hodzic also added two goals in the win. Sam Gove went the distance in goal, posting two saves in the win.
