Men’s Tennis Splits Pair of Matches to Start Florida Trip
3/13/2022 10:32:00 PM | Men's Tennis
PEMBROKE PINES/AVE MARIA, Fla. -- Despite playing with a five-man lineup with three starters out due to injury, the Bucknell men's tennis team got off to a good start on its Spring Break trip to Florida, clipping Atlantis 4-3 on Sunday morning. The Bison then traveled across the state to take on Ave Maria, the 17th-ranked NAIA program in the nation, and fell by a 6-1 count.
Against Atlantis, the Bison claimed the doubles point, and then Michael Owen, Nicolas Grunig, and Charlie Nordahl, all playing up at No. 2, 3, and 5, respectively, secured the team victory with clutch singles wins. Grunig and Nordahl both rallied after dropping the first set, with Nordahl claiming his first career singles win by prevailing 10-8 in the third.
Nordahl also teamed with Harrison Gold for the first time at No. 1 doubles, and they prevailed 6-3. Owen and Grunig won in a tiebreaker at No. 2, which was critical as Bucknell had to default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Atlantis, a first-year program, was coming off a 4-3 win over Division I Duquesne on Friday.
Bucknell again won the doubles point in the afternoon affair against Ave Maria. The Gold/Nordahl and Owen/Grunig combos won by nearly identical scores as the morning matches, with Owen and Grunig once again securing the point in a tiebreaker.
Ave Maria bounced back to win all five singles matches that were contested. While the Bison won a couple of three-setters earlier in the day, this time it was the Gyrenes claiming three-set verdicts at No. 1 and 2 singles. Gold and Owen both won second sets to extend their matches, but in the super tiebreakers Bruno Duarte defeated Gold 10-6, and Fernando Orihuela outlasted Owen 11-9.
The Bison are back in action on Wednesday, taking on Lynn at 2 p.m. in Boca Raton. Lynn is the No. 3-ranked team in Division II.
