SAN DIEGO – The Bucknell University women's water polo team fell 13-5 to No. 20 San Diego State on Saturday evening from the Aztec Aquaplex.
The Bison were tied with the Aztecs, 2-2, after one, but a strong second period in which SDSU outscored the Bison 5-1 helped the host school pull away in Bucknell's first game of its spring break trip.
After facing an early 1-0 deficit just one minute into the game, Bucknell responded well, taking the lead, 2-1, with 3:46 left in the first on two goals in a 30-second span. Chloe Smith scored Bucknell's first goal of the day on a powerplay opportunity, while Bella Moynihan scored Bucknell's second as Bucknell took a 2-1 lead.
However, SDSU's Laurene Padilla capitalized on a penalty shot to tie the game at two with 2:40 left, starting a 6-1 run for the Aztecs that helped the host take firm control of the game.
Paige Furano broke the scoreless streak for Bucknell at the 2:58 mark of the second period, but the Bison still found themselves trailing 7-3 at the break. The Bison would pull no closer than five the rest of the way, being held to just two goals in the second half in falling to 6-10 on the season.
Bucknell went 5-12 on powerplay opportunities in the game, with Emma Molaski scoring Bucknell's other two goals in the second half. Annika Lampen made six saves in the defeat.
The Bison return to action on Sunday for two games beginning with a noon tilt against UC San Diego. Bucknell will then face Austin College at 4 p.m. to wrap up the Aztec Invite.
