Tyler Dunn Hits First Career Home Run in Win
After a slow start for both teams offensively in which the two squads combined for just one hit through the first few innings, the Highlanders got on the board first in the third, capitalizing on several walks and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to take the lead.
However, first-year pitcher Ben Magovern, making his first career start, managed a big strikeout with the bases still full to limit the damage to one.
The Bison pulled a run back in the fifth after Jacob Terwilliger walked with one out. Two errors by the Highlanders later, Terwilliger touched home to tie the game at one.
Bucknell then took the lead in the seventh, capitalizing on another two errors by the Highlanders. Grant Voytovich reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, before a bunt single by Brendan Lowery moved the sophomore one base. Another error by the Highlanders on a ball hit by Dunn then allowed Voytovich to score, giving Bucknell a 2-1 lead.
Radford responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, this time on a walk with the bases loaded. However, Graeme Carroll entered the game in a tough situation with the bases loaded and two outs, inducing a groundout to third baseman Mason Kelly to end the threat.
Bucknell broke open the game in the eighth, finding its offensive groove in the inning with four hits in the frame. Anthony Sherwin started things off with a walk, followed by a single by Chris Cannizzaro. Kelly then doubled home Sherwin, setting up Voytovich to single home both Kelly and Cannizzaro.
A walk by Lowery one batter later then set up Dunn to launch his first career home run over the right field fence to finish Bucknell's scoring for the inning and take a commanding 8-2 lead.
The Bison added seven more runs in the ninth, exploding for a season-best ten hits overall. Lowery, Voytovich, Cannizzaro, Logan Kellerman, and Sherwin each picked up RBIs in the inning, with Sherwin highlighting the scoring with a two-RBI double.
Carroll cruised the rest of the game, allowing just two hits in 2.1 IP to help Bucknell to its largest margin of victory since a 14-1 win over Niagara on March 1, 2019. Bucknell has now out-hit its opponents in three of its first four games.
Dunn racked up a career-best four RBIs against the Highlanders, adding an RBI single in the ninth. The first-year from Boiling Springs, Pa. was one of three Bison with two or more hits along with Lowery and Voytovich. Voytovich managed a career-best three hits batting in the cleanup spot, also adding three RBIs. Six Bison overall managed hits on the day.
Magovern had a solid outing in his first collegiate start, throwing five innings and allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts.
Bucknell returns to action on Saturday against the Highlanders at 2 p.m. for a single game.
