GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Freshman Jake Maddaloni fired a career-best, 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to lead the Bucknell men's golf team to a strong finish at the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club. The Bison matched their opening-round score with a 5-under 283, and they finished in eighth-place with a 54-hole total of 1-under 863.
The five players in Bucknell's lineup combined for 17 birdies and nothing worse than bogey in the final round. All five players birdied the par-5 14th hole, and four of the five made birdies at the par-5 second hole.
The 5-under 18-hole score is tied for third-best in school history in relation to par. The 863 composite is the fourth-best 54-hole score in school history, and the 1-under total is second-best in relation to par in team annals. The Bison posted a 6-under 858 on the same course two years ago.
Maddaloni made five birdies, including three in a span of four holes, on the way to his team-best 69. Blake Wisdom followed with a 70, and Jason Lohwater and Michael Rudnick added 72s.
Lohwater's 72 came on the heels of two straight 70s, and he secured a T-10th finish with a 4-under 212 over 54 holes.
The team championship came right down to the wire, with Middle Tennessee State finishing at 29-under 835 to hold off Utah Valley by one shot. Third-place Missouri State led the field with a final-round 272 but finished well back in third place at 14-under 850. Seton Hall (-12), Delaware (-11), Drake (-9), Marshall (-7), and Bucknell (-1) all finished under par for the tournament.
Bucknell bested the two other Patriot League teams in the 18-team field. Host Loyola finished 14th at 880, and Holy Cross placed 16th at 889.
Middle Tennessee's Kevin Jegers closed with a 65 to get to 16-under for the tournament, and he won medalist honors by three shots over Joseph Glenn of Utah Valley, who finished with a 66.
Bucknell returns to tournament action March 26-27 at the Battle at Rum Pointe in Berlin, Md. The Bison will be looking to defend their title in that event. Bucknell bested the 10-team field there last spring.
