Connor Davis sets record with third-straight PL Rookie of Week nod
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Three Bucknell men's lacrosse players earned Patriot League GEICO weekly awards for their efforts during their team's 23-7 rout of St. John's.
Freshman attackman Connor Davis broke the Patriot League record by capturing his third-straight Rookie of the Week nod. Senior captain Nick Crovatto was tabbed as the Faceoff Specialist of the Week for the second time this young season while senior long-stick defensive midfielder Frankie Higgins was voted as the Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Davis was sensational for the Bison, netting six goals to tie the single game freshman record for the second time in three weeks. He became the first Bucknell newcomer to twice notch six goals in a single game, as only Thomas Flibotte (Drexel, 2013), Kevin Roth (Kutztown, 1989) and Rink Smith (Gettysburg, 1980) had previously accomplished this feat. Davis, whose previous six-goal outing came in his collegiate debut at Mercer, now has 16 on the season, nine more than his closest teammate.
Davis, who is one of only 14th student-athletes to earn consecutive Rookie of the Week awards, is the first to capture three in a row. The Patriot League record for most Rookie of the Week nods in a campaign belongs to Bucknell's Charlie Streep, who took home five in 2009.
Crovatto had an equally big day against the Red Storm, winning 18 of 22 faceoffs and matching Jarett Witzal's single-game record with 14 ground balls. He also assisted on two of Davis's goals off of faceoff wins. Notably, Crovatto's 18 faceoff wins moved his career total to 203. He is just the fifth Bison to reach 200 in his career (faceoff statistics began being kept in 1999).
Crovatto was previously recognized as the Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week after going toe to toe with Mercer's Ashton Wood, a Preseason All-SoCon faceoff specialist who recorded the NCAA's 11th highest faceoff percentage (.629) a year ago. Crovatto won 11 of the 19 faceoffs he took and also paced Bucknell with seven ground balls.
Higgins was honored after tying for the team lead with three caused turnovers and finishing in a tie for second behind Crovatto with three ground balls. He was a critical piece of a defense that held St. John's without a goal for the first 17 minutes of the contest. He becomes the first Bison to earn Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season; the most recent Bison to capture this award was Travis Talarico in 2021.
Crovatto, Davis, Higgins and the Bison next return to the road for a 12 p.m. game at Marist on Saturday, Feb. 26.
