GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Paced by a 4-under-par 68 from Jack Gardner and a 2-under 70 from Jason Lohwater, the Bucknell men's golf team jumped out to a strong start at the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club. The Bison tallied a 5-under 283 team score – tied for the third-best in relation to par in school history – and reside in a tie for fifth place in a quality field of 18 teams after the first of three rounds.
Gardner began his day with a bogey on the very first hole, but that was his lone blemish. He quickly got back to even with a birdie at the par-5 second hole, and he followed with four more at 8, 10, 14, and 15 on the way to his career-best round.
Lohwater started his day with a birdie on the second hole, and he made the turn at 2-under after adding a second birdie at No. 6. Like Gardner, Lohwater made back-to-back birds on 14 and 15 to offset a couple of back-nine bogeys, and he finished with a par at No. 1 to shoot 70.
Bucknell also counted a 72 from Jake Maddaloni and a 73 from Blake Wisdom, who both made four birdies in their rounds. Maddaloni made a nice comeback after a double-bogey on his first hole of the day at No. 3. Michael Rudnick's 75 was discarded.
Bucknell's only other appearance at Palm Valley came in the spring of 2020, just before the season was halted due to the pandemic, and the Bison posted a pair of 5-under 283s that week. Bucknell has now shot 5-under or better as a team six times in team history, and three of them have been on this course.
Utah Valley (13-under 275) and Middle Tennessee (277) both got double digits into red numbers with terrific first rounds. Delaware is in third place after posting 280, followed by Missouri State (282), Bucknell, and Seton Hall (283). Drake (285), South Dakota (287), and Marshall (287) also posted sub-par team scores.
The Bison finished ahead of the two other Patriot League teams in the field. Holy Cross is tied for 10th (291), and host Loyola is tied for 15th (295).
Gardner is in a three-way tie for sixth place on the individual leaderboard, as 48 players shot even-par or better on Sunday. Utah Valley's Kai Iguchi, Middle Tennessee's Kevin Jegers, and Seton Hall individual Angus O'Brien all shot 6-under 66.
