LEWISBURG, Pa. – Canisius broke open a tight game with a four-goal run in the fourth quarter and defeated Bucknell 14-12 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium. Laurel McHale and Tatumn Kohlbrenner hit career highs with four goals apiece for the Bison, while Skylar McArthur tallied five for the Golden Griffins.
The Bison jumped right out of the gates with three straight goals to start the game. Kohlbrenner, scored from the 8-meter arc for the first tally of the season, which was part of a 3-for-3 day for her on free-position shots. A cutting McHale scored off a beautiful feed from freshman Carly Cenci, and then McHale scored again for a 3-0 lead with 4:36 left in the opening period.
Canisius scored five of the game's next six goals, however, and took its first lead of the day at 5-4 on Paige Stachura's marker with 3:22 left in the second quarter. Kohlbrenner scored off a McHale feed in the final minute of the half to make it 5-all at intermission.
Bucknell led one more time at 6-5 on McHale's third of the day. The game was later deadlocked at 6-6 and 7-7 before the Golden Griffins took the lead for good on strikes by Sarah Kilburn and Caroline Netti just 49 seconds apart.
Katie Wendell's goal just over two minutes into the fourth quarter brought the Bison within 10-9, but McArthur scored twice in a row, and Netti and Riley Davis added two more, and within five minutes Canisius' lead ballooned to 14-9.
Kohlbrenner assisted on a McHale goal then scored twice more herself to make it a 14-12 game with 2:38 to go. Ella Payer won her team-high fourth draw control of the game to give the Bison another possession to move even closer, but the Bison turned the ball over and Canisius was able to run off most of the remaining time.
Canisius finished with a 27-25 shot advantage, despite committing 19 turnovers to Bucknell's 12. The Bison had a 16-11 edge in ground balls.
Senior Caitlin Tucker and freshman Colleen Kazanjian shared time in goal for the Bison, with Kazanjian making four saves in relief. The Bison also started two first-year attackers in Cenci and Allie Boyce. Both collected their first collegiate points, Cenci with the early assist to McHale, and Boyce netted her first collegiate goal in the second quarter.
McHale added two assists for a six-point game, and Kohlbrenner tallied one assist to give her five points on the day.
Bucknell hits the road for the first time in 2022 when it travels to Binghamton next Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
