Men's Tennis Sweeps Marist to Complete 2-0 Weekend

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – The Bucknell men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and then swept the six singles contests, dropping only one set along the way, in a 7-0 romp at Marist on Saturday evening at Cross Court Tennis Club.
The victory finished off a 2-0 weekend for the Bison (2-5), who edged Siena 4-3 on Friday night. Bucknell won three three-set singles matches to pull that one out against the Saints. Twenty-four hours later there was no such drama, as the Bison avenged 2019 and 2020 losses to Marist in convincing fashion.
The doubles tandems of Michael Owen and Nick Mueller at No. 2, and Nicolas Grunig and Ink Chen at No. 3, were the first off the courts as Bucknell took the doubles point for the first time this spring.
Tim Zelikovsky, who provided the clinching point at Siena, defeated Jack Sequerth 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 to get the Bison going in singles. A few minutes later Grunig cruised past Momotaro Kawahara 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 to officially clinch the team win. It was the first career dual-match singles win for the freshman Grunig.
No. 2 Mueller, No. 5 Chen, and No. 3 Owen followed with straight-set wins, and then No. 1 man Harrison Gold capped off the night by completing a comeback victory over Gabriel Castillo in a third-set tiebreaker.
"It was important to finally get the doubles point and set the tone for the match," said head coach Bruce Myers. "It was great to see Nico get his first dual-match singles win. Now we are looking forward to our first home match next weekend."
After a busy road slate to start the spring, the Bison will now play at home at the Central PA Tennis Center in South Williamsport on each of the next two Saturdays. First in is Saint Joseph's next Saturday at 1 p.m.
