About the Bison
- One of the largest fields ever to attend the Bucknell Invitational will be in town this week for the 2022 edition of Bucknell's annual fall tournament. Nineteen teams will be in the field, including a squad from the Veteran Golfers Association. The VGA supports military veterans and their families through the sport of golf. The organization sponsors more than 450 local tournaments across the country and also stages a national championship each fall. The VGA enters a team in a number of college tournaments as well, and Bucknell head coach Mike Binney, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran himself, invited them to the Bucknell Invitational for the second year in a row.
- Bucknell's lead unit this week will consist of Jackson Bussell, Andres Barraza, Blake Wisdom, Jack Gardner, and James Robbins. The Bison B squad will feature James Key, Josh Holtschlag, Michael Rudnick, Jake Maddaloni, and Max Orwicz.
- This is the fourth of five fall tournaments for the Bison. They have placed ninth in each of the first three, the Alex Lagowitz Memorial at Colgate, the Cornell/Temple Invitational, and the Macdonald Cup at Yale.
- Bucknell's most recent tournament came against a strong field at the Macdonald Cup on Sept. 24-25. That event utilized a play-6, count-5 format, and the Bison compiled team scores of 368-368-359. Bussell was the low Bison with an even-par 210 (69-72-69), good for a 12th-place finish. His weekend was highlighted by a run of five straight birdies in the first round. He made 11 birdies for the week, seventh-most in the field.
- Bussell was later named the Patriot League Golfer of the Week for the second time this season. Blake Wisdom has also won the award this fall, giving Bucknell the Patriot League honoree after each of its three events.
- Bussell's 71.8 scoring average is the best on the team, just ahead of Wisdom at 72.9. Bussell has shot even-par or better in four of his eight rounds, and seven of the eight are 74 or better.
- Wisdom has Bucknell's low round of the fall so far, a 3-under 67 in the first round of the Cornell/Temple Invitational at the 1912 Club. Wisdom finished T-9th in that event.
- Barraza played well at Yale in his second collegiate tournament. He shot 73-70-75 to finish T-30th, and he has a 73.4 average through five rounds. Key is also a first-year player who is off to a strong start. His even-par 70 in the final round at Yale was his best so far.
- Bucknell has been very successful in its home tournament in recent years, winning six of the last 18Â titles, while finishing as the runner-up on six other occasions in that span.
- The Bison have won their home tournament seven times, including four straight titles from 2007-10, Bucknell also won this event in 1981, 2003, and 2004.
- Bison winning individual titles include Rob Wagner in 1981, Kyle Moran in 2004, Stuart Lindgren in 2007, Jeff Pike in 2008, Andrew Cohen in 2009, and Dan Bernard in 2012.
- Bucknell tied for second place with Youngstown State in last year's tournament. Army won with a 54-hole total of 840, and the Bison and Penguins were next at 847. Monmouth (848) and Colgate (851) rounded out the top five in the 14-team field.
- Monmouth's Ron Robinson was the medalist with a 5-under total of 205 (64-70-71). Eight players finished under par for the tournament, including Bucknell's Jackson Bussell and Jason Lohwater, who both posted 1-under 209 to finish T-7th.
- Michael Rudnick and Blake Wisdom both finished T-10th at 1-over 211.
- Bucknell finishes up the fall season on Oct. 24-25 at the Nassau Invitational, hosted LIU at Glen Cove GC. This will be Bucknell's first appearance at the event.
