LEWISBURG, Pa. – Anthony Lazaridis scored two goals to help Binghamton come from behind and defeat Bucknell 2-1 in a non-league men's soccer game Tuesday night at rain-soaked Emmitt Field. Cade McGrath tallied his second goal of the season for the Bison just 50 seconds into the match, but the Bearcats flipped the script with goals in the 39th and 64th minutes.
A steady downpour blanketed the area throughout pregame warmups and for the duration of the game, but the Bison got on the board less than a minute after the opening whistle on a goal engineered by two freshmen.
Charlie Holmes collected a long ball over the top on the right side, dribbled around his man on the byline, and centered a pass to McGrath in the center of the area. McGrath's initial attempt was cleared off the line by a Binghamton defender, the ricochet went right into Holmes's midsection and then fell to McGrath, who didn't miss on the second attempt. It was McGrath's first goal at Emmitt Field, with the other coming at American.
Bucknell (2-9) had two great chances to add to the lead later in the first half. Not even two minutes after his goal, McGrath got behind the defense but just missed the near post with his shot. In the 26th minute, Waldemar Kattrup changed directions and ripped one off the left post, and Nick Prime's follow on the rebound went wide.
That left the door open for Binghamton (2-6-3) to draw level with just over six minutes left in the half. It all started on a free kick from goalkeeper Mats Roorda just outside his own 18. Ethan Homler flicked a header past the Bison back line, and Lazaridis was able to get around Bison keeper Freddie Lapworth and tuck a shot inside the far post.
Bucknell looked dangerous again early in the second half. Two minutes after the resumption of play, some nice build-up play from Mo Tall and Holmes led to a Kattrup shot from the center of the area, but Roorda dove to his left for the save. Tall was on the attack 12 minutes later, bursting through two defenders on the left side before firing a low shot that was kicked away by Roorda with a Bison breaking behind him looking for a tap-in at the back post.
The Bearcats evened up possession with a good stretch midway through the second half, and they were rewarded with Lazaridis's second goal of the night. Carlo Cavalar won a 50-50 ball near midfield, Parker McKnight gained possession and found Lazaridis on the left side. The junior cut back infield and placed a shot inside the top left corner from outside the box.
Bucknell pressed for a tying goal of its own in the late stages. With 11 minutes to go, a bouncing ball in the box fell to Sebastian Paz, who put his header over the bar. Two minutes later, Eddie Perez-Pelaez hit the crossbar with a free kick a few yards outside the box.
Bucknell outshot Binghamton 15-13, marking the seventh time in 11 games the Bison finished with more shots than their opponent. Lapworth tallied four saves, while Roorda stopped three.
The Bison are back in action on Saturday at Boston University at 2 p.m.
