Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison played very well in splitting two home matches against Lehigh and Lafayette last week, and now they look to keep building on that improved form with a non-league home game against Binghamton on Tuesday followed by a trip to Boston University on Saturday.
- An 84th-minute goal from Sebastian Paz helped deliver a 2-1 win over Lehigh last Wednesday. Mo Tall in the 22nd minute scored on a direct free kick for the second time this season, but Lehigh equalized early in the second half. Paz gave the Bison all three points with a first-touch finish off a nicely threaded through ball from Cade McGrath. Bucknell outshot Lehigh 22-9 in the match.
- On Saturday night against Lafayette, the Bison outshot the Leopards 18-9 overall and 14-3 in the second half but fell 1-0 on a first-half penalty kick. Bucknell dominated possession in the second half and generated a number of quality chances, including a shot off the post from Marco Valentic in the 84th minute.
- Freshman goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth made his Bucknell debut last week and played well in the two games against Lehigh and Lafayette. He totaled seven saves with just the two goals against, one of which came on a point-blank header and the other on a penalty kick.
- Tall leads the team in goals (2) and points (6). Both of his tallies are on perfectly placed free kicks, and both came in Bucknell victories. A senior from Burkina Faso, Tall missed all of last season due to injury, and he was limited to just five games in the COVID-modified 2021 spring season.
- Bucknell has outshot its opponents 129-105 and out-cornered the opposition 51-45 on the season but has been outscored 22-8.
- Bucknell's other goal-scorers this year are McGrath, Jordan Miller, Michael Dempsey, and MJ Kuczura. Miller's seventh career goal came against Saint Francis, while the other four registered their first career goals.
- Dave Brandt is Bucknell's 14th full-time head coach and just the third dating back to 1967. Brandt, who was hired in December after interim head coach Matt Brown guided the squad last season, brought with him a remarkable career record of 354-86-40 in stints at Messiah, Navy, and Hope. His .779 winning percentage was 20th-best in NCAA men's soccer history among coaches from all divisions with a minimum of 10 years. Brandt won six Division III national championships at Messiah and led Navy to the 2013 Patriot League title and an NCAA Tournament first-round win. Â
- Brandt's first Bucknell squad is a young one, with 16 of the 27 players on the roster in their freshman or sophomore year. The Bison returned 14 players who saw game action last year, including leading scorer Jordan Miller.
- The Bison have four captains in 2022: seniors Eddie Perez-Pelaez and Chris Masur, and juniors MJ Kuczura and Collin Murphy. Kuczura is in his second year as a captain. A year ago he became the first sophomore captain in team history.
- The Bearcats come in at 1-6-3 on the season but are unbeaten in their last two. Binghamton played a scoreless draw at NJIT on Saturday, one game after hammering Hartford 8-1.
- Binghamton had been shut out in three straight games before posting its highest goal total since moving to Division I in 2001.
- The Bearcats have scored 11 goals this season, all coming in three games: the 8-1 win over Hartford, a 2-2 draw with Niagara, and a 3-1 loss to James Madison.
- Markos Touroukis leads the team with three goals along with an assist. Matthew Cozetti has two goals and an assist, and Shawn Coles and Devin Heanue each have a goal and two assists.
- Mats Roorda has seen the bulk of the action in goal with seven starts. He has 21 saves with eight goals against and a couple of shutouts. P.J. Parker also has three starts and one relief appearance.
- Head coach Paul Marco is in his 21st season at Binghamton. His 2022 squad returned eight starters from last year's 7-9-1 team. The Bearcats were picked sixth in the America East preseason poll.
- Binghamton has been a common non-league opponent for Bucknell in recent years, with the Bearcats holding a 7-5-4 lead in a series that dates back to 2001.
- Bucknell snapped an 0-5-1 series stretch with a 2-1 win at Binghamton in 2018, and then the two teams drew 1-1 in each of the two most recent meetings.
- The Bison scored late goals to salvage draws in each of the last two clashes. In the 2019 matchup at Emmitt Field, Patrick O'Hara found an equalizer with 1:42 left in regulation to help the Bison earn a 1-1 draw. Bison goalkeeper Emmett Witmer saved a penalty kick only three minutes prior to O'Hara's goal. Last year at Binghamton, Sebastian Paz scored in the 78th minute, volleying home a long throw from Jack Roberto.
- Bucknell is 2-3-3 on Binghamton's home field and 3-4-1 at home in the series.
- The Terriers are on a four-game tie streak after earning a 1-1 draw at Navy on Saturday, and they bring a 2-2-6 record into Tuesday's non-league Boston derby with Harvard.
- At 0-1-3 in the Patriot League, Boston University is tied for eighth place with Bucknell. The Terriers dropped their league opener at Colgate 3-0, and since then have shared the points with Lafayette (0-0), Army (2-2), and Navy.
- Andrew Rent's first goal of the season came was a 73rd-minute equalizer in Annapolis on Saturday. Â
- Boston University has the fourth-stingiest defense in the Patriot League, conceding 10 goals in 10 games. Goalkeeper Francesco Montali leads the league with an .816 save percentage.
- The Terriers have produced eight goals of their own, with three coming from Colin Innes. Rent has a team-high three assists to go with his goal.
- Defender Gianluca Arlotti was a Preseason All-Patriot League honoree.
- With the NCAA eliminating overtime in regular-season games, an incredible trend in the Bucknell-Boston University series will not continue this year. The two teams have squared off 10 times previously, and nine of those went to overtime.
- The two teams first met in 2013, with Bucknell winning 1-0 in extra time, and each of the first eight between the two teams were tied after 90 minutes.
- That OT streak ended in 2019, when Bucknell won 3-0 at Emmitt Field. The two teams did not see each other during the COVID-modified 2021 spring season, and then they went right back to their OT ways with a scoreless draw in Lewisburg last fall.
- Bucknell leads the head-to-head series 3-1-6. One of those draws came in the 2016 Patriot League Tournament, and the Bison went on to advance on penalty kicks.
- Bucknell is 1-0-4 at home against the Terriers and 2-1-2 in Boston.
- Bucknell's most memorable series win was a dramatic 3-2 overtime verdict in the 2014 Patriot League championship game in Boston. Lincoln, Massachusetts native Sebastiaan Blickman scored twice for the Bison, including the golden goal off an assist from Jack Zollicoffer.
- The Boston University game is the first of three in a row on the road for the Bison. They will follow with trips to Army on Oct. 14 and Syracuse on Oct. 18. Â Â
