BOSTON, Mass. – Two goals 3:27 apart in the first half were the difference in Boston University's 2-0 win over the Bucknell men's soccer team on Saturday at Nickerson Field.
Bucknell entered the game 3-1-6 all-time against the Terriers, with nine of the 10 games requiring overtime. This time Boston University secured its first multi-goal win over the Bison thanks to the first-half strikes in quick succession from Colin Innes and Griffin Roach.
The Terriers (3-3-6, 1-1-3 Patriot League) put the Bison defense under pressure right from the opening whistle. An important clearance from Eddie Perez-Pelaez after a free kick from the left edge of the box helped save a goal in the third minute, and in the 15th minute goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth made a terrific diving save on Brian Hernandez to keep it scoreless.
Boston University finally put a goal on the board in the 19th minute. Innes and Quinn Matulis worked a 1-2 at the edge of the box, and Innes fired the return pass into the right side netting for his fourth goal of the season.
Less than four minutes later it was 2-0, as Matulis's free kick from the left edge of the area was headed home by Roach.
Bucknell's brightest moment of the first half came in the 27th minute, when Marco Valentic forced a diving save from goalkeeper Francesco Montali.
The Bison had some brighter moments in the second half. Collin Murphy had a clean header saved four minutes into the half, and reserve forward Zane Domsohn redirected MJ Kuszura's deflected shot onto the right post. Domsohn had a second attempt at the rebound, but Montali was able to put it out for a corner kick.
Bucknell (2-10, 1-4 PL) outshot Boston University 6-4 in the second half after the Terriers held a 10-3 advantage in the opening 45 minutes. Lapworth finished with five saves while Montali logged four.
The Bison are now off until next Friday, when they visit Army at 6 p.m.
