Bucknell Field Hockey Falls to American 3-2 but Clinches Postseason Berth
10/22/2022 3:19:00 PM | Field Hockey
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Charllene Boshoff scored the tiebreaking goal early in the fourth quarter, American's third of the day on penalty corners, and the Eagles clipped Bucknell 3-2 on Saturday in Patriot League field hockey action at sunny Graham Field. Despite the loss, the Bison clinched one of the four Patriot League Tournament berths.
Lily Neilson and Rachel Apa scored for the Bison, who fell to 3-2 in Patriot League play while the Eagles concluded their league slate at 4-2. American jumped past Bucknell into second place in the standings, sending the Bison into a tie for third with Lehigh at 3-2. The Bison and Mountain Hawks both clinched postseason spots with one game remaining, as both own tiebreakers over 2-3 Holy Cross and Lafayette.
Neilson's 11th goal of the season gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead just 3:03 into the match. Neilson was 1v1 with a defender at the top of the circle, and after losing the ball momentarily she regathered and blasted home one of her patented reverse-stick rockets.
The Bison outshot American 6-0 in the opening period, but the Eagles flipped the field in the second quarter. They gained a 5-1 edge in shots in the period and leveled the contest on a Megan Hoffman goal with 7:02 remaining. Bison goalkeeper Clara McCormick made the initial save on Tayla-Jade Weiss's drive off a penalty corner, but Hoffman flipped in the rebound for her third goal of the season.
American's top scorer Federica Turina Dellamaggiore gave the Eagles their first lead of the day when she scored straight off a penalty corner 3:28 into the third quarter. That advantage lasted only 88 seconds, however, as the Bison struck right back on a penalty corner of their own. Kira Leclercq's drive was redirected in by Apa for her fifth goal of the season.
Boshoff's shot 2:13 into the fourth made it three goals off corners in American's first five attempts.
Bucknell pulled its goalie with five minutes remaining and earned two late corners. Bryn Underwood made one save on Leclercq, and Neilson saw her drive skip wide with just over a minute to play.
Bucknell outshot American 14-12 and finished with a 7-6 edge in penalty corners. McCormick made two saves for the Bison, while Underwood had six for AU.
Bucknell is back in action on Sunday at home against Lock Haven at noon. Boston University will be in Lewisburg for the regular-season finale the following Sunday, when postseason seeding will still be up for grabs.
