LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's track & field team began its weekend with the first day of the Bison Open and Multi Meet. The Bison earned wins in three separate events, and rookie Brian Scotto put on a show in the 60m hurdles with a Bucknell all-time top 10 performance.
"Our men got exactly what I was hoping to get out of day one. Our DMR teams went 1-2 and challenged each other pretty well with some nice splits, and racing tomorrow will give them the trial-final feel that is so critical at league championships," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Our three freshmen ran fantastic in the 5k, led by a nice negative split last mile from Peter Sorensen for the win. We went 1-2 in the high hurdles, with Brian Scotto running to the win and hitting the fifth-fastest time in school history. It was great to see Kam Schreffler starting to come around nicely after a rough freshman year to finish second. Our three multis are in very good shape after day one, and all three have strong events coming tomorrow for day two."
Scotto, who landed on Bucknell's top 10 list during the Bison Opener in December, moved up a spot to number six all-time with an 8.21 in the prelims. He was nearly as good in the finals, taking first with an 8.22. Sophomore teammate Kameron Schreffler placed second, running an 8.48.
Bucknell also earned a win in the 5000 behind the effort of rookie Peter Sorensen (15:27.47), while Grayson Crockett (3rd, 15:31.49) and Thomas White (4th, 15:42.19) weren't far behind.
Bucknell teams took first and second in the distance medley relay as well, and both squads ran IC4A qualifying times. The winning team (Brendan O'Toole, Schreffler, Alex Simpson, Samuel Whittaker) posted a 10:17.26, while the second-place team (Bobby Lynam, Sam Coughlin, Colby Belczyk, Ben Santos) finished with a 10:19.79.
Through the first several events of the heptathlon, Bucknell sophomore Miguel Negrete sits second with 2,550 points, helped by a second-place finish in shot put (37-08.75). Sophomore Franco Perinotti is in fifth (2361), winning the heptathlon's 60m dash with a 7.22 and placing third in shot put (37-05.75). Finally, senior Aiden Brewer is in eighth place with 2,196 points.
Bucknell returns to the Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday to finish out the meet, while others will compete at Penn State's Sykes and Sabock Challenge.
