"It was a very good weekend for our men's program. I thought many of the guys who participated in multiple events over the two days did an outstanding job," said head coach Kevin Donner. "I felt with a weekend off coming up, this would be a good time to experiment and challenge ourselves with many of the guys going back-to-back days to simulate the war of attrition of a league championship. For the most part, our men passed this test, and a weekend off will be good for them to take a mental and a physical break to prepare for the second half of the indoor season, which includes the championship meet."
At the Penn State meet, rookie Colby Belczyk continued to impress during his first collegiate season with a strong finish in the 800. Belczyk ran a 1:53.03, just missing out on a Bucknell all-time top 10 mark and placing 15th. Sophomore Alex Simpson ran a personal-best 1:54.33 in the 800, finishing just four spots behind his teammate and grabbing an IC4A qualifier.
Also setting a new career-high was Samuel Whittaker in the mile, running the event in 4:16.15. Another distance standout was Brendan O'Toole. The senior ran an 8:30.83 in the 3000, grabbing a personal best. Sophomore Robert Feeney posted a career-best 56-11.25 in weight throw as well, placing 11th out of the field of 24.
In Lewisburg, sophomore Ethan Wolford-Tuffy earned first place in the 400 with a 49.60, beating out Lock Haven's second-place finisher by 0.26 seconds. Wolford-Tuffy has three first-place finishes in the 400 this season.
Senior Brett Zatlin, sophomore Rayven Sample and rookie Grant Ellis all finished second in their respective events. Zatlin ran the 500 in a personal-best 1:09.87, Sample took second in the 800 with a personal best 1:57.69, and Ellis' 6-04.25 high jump mark was also a new career high.
Senior Ian Lawrence placed third in the triple jump (43-09.75), and fellow senior Aiden Brewer set a new personal-high mark in the heptathlon after jumping from eighth place on Friday to third on Saturday with 4,352 points.
Bucknell will have next weekend off before getting back into competition at the VMI Invite on Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12.
