Bucknell at a Glance
- The Bison are back on the road this Saturday, taking on Toledo and host Michigan State in East Lansing.
- Bucknell is in the midst of a tough early-season schedule, having opened the spring dual-match season with 7-0 losses at James Madison and 13th-ranked North Carolina last weekend.
- The Bison did claim a victory at No. 2 doubles at JMU, with Tim Zelikovsky and Carlos Carvalho teaming for a 6-4 verdict, but the Dukes took the other two matches to win the doubles point.
- Against North Carolina, Bucknell's No. 1 doubles team of Michael Owen and Nick Mueller were up 5-3 and 30-love serving for the match, but play was halted when the Tar Heels clinched the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3.
- Owen played UNC's Mac Kiger to a 7-5 second set at No. 2 singles, and Ink Chen lost 9-7 in a second-set tiebreaker to Henry Lieberman at No. 4.
- The Bison competed in four fall tournaments, including their own annual event to get the season started. Bucknell also visited Bloomsburg, Binghamton, and Richmond.
- Mueller enjoyed a terrific fall campaign, posting a team-best 8-1 record. Seven of those wins came in straight sets, and his only loss came in the final at the River City Open at Richmond. Mueller was also Bucknell's top doubles player last spring, going 7-4 in duals.
- Zelikovsky, a sophomore, and freshman Nicolas Gruning both posted 6-3 records in the fall. Gruning won the first three, and six of the first seven, matches of his career.
- Like Bucknell, the Rockets have also faced a tough schedule to start spring dual-match action. Last week, they lost 7-0 at No. 6 Ohio State and 6-1 at Indiana.
- Marko Galic notched Toledo's lone team point last week with a three-set win at No. 5 singles against the Hoosiers.
- Pawit Sornlaksup at No. 1 and Vikash Singh at No. 6 both dropped three-setters at Indiana.
- Last November, Toledo posted a 20-9 combined record with three individual champions at the MAC Indoors. Galic, Adam Kovac, and Cole Shoults all won their singles flights.
- Toledo finished 7-9 overall and 3-7 in the Mid-America Conference last season.
- The Spartans are off to a 4-0 start in duals, with wins over Virginia Tech (4-3), Eastern Illinois (7-0), Cleveland State (7-0), and IUPUI (6-1). All four victories came at home.
- Michigan State used 12 different singles players in those four duals, with each playing twice, and in a different lineup position each time.
- The Spartans enjoyed a successful fall season, highlighted by freshman Max Sheldon advancing to the quarterfinals of the main singles draw at ITA Regionals.
- Bucknell heads to Philadelphia next Sunday, Feb. 6, to face Drexel at 1:30 p.m. The Dragons are off to a 2-0 start with wins over Buffalo and Brown. Â
