Bucknell at a Glance
- Coming off a pair of hard-fought losses to high-caliber opponents last week, the Bison women's soccer team continues its away stretch with games at Mount St. Mary's and Columbia this week.
- The Bison are now 1-2-1 on the season after dropping a 3-1 home verdict to No. 12 West Virginia last Friday and a 3-2 decision at MAAC frontrunner Monmouth on Sunday. Previously, Bucknell defeated Youngstown State 1-0 and played Towson to a 1-1 draw.
- Rylee Donaldson and Claire Mensi have two goals apiece in the early going. Donaldson also has an assist, giving her a team-high five points. Donaldson ranks second in the Patriot League in points, trailing only Boston University's Margaret Berry, who has six points from three goals.
- Donaldson and Mensi are two of the seven Patriot League players with multiple goals on the young season.
- The Bison turned in a strong performance despite the loss against West Virginia. Bucknell scored the first goal of the game coming out of a lightning delay, with goalkeeper Jenna Hall getting it all started with a booming punt that nearly reached the opposite penalty area. Abby Gearhart ran onto the delivery, then slipped a pass through to Donaldson for the goal. Hall was credited with her first career assist, and Gearhart has now assisted on both of Donaldson's goals this season.
- Bucknell conceded a penalty and an own goal among Monmouth's three tallies on Sunday. In fact, the Bison have yielded a penalty in each of the last three games against Towson, West Virginia and Monmouth. Three of their opponents' seven goals on the season have come from the spot.
- Mensi converted a PK of her own in the Monmouth game, the second of her career. The first came against William & Mary back in 2018.
- Freshman Kelley Francis opened her account with her first collegiate goal in the final minute at Monmouth.
- The West Virginia game was Bucknell's first against a ranked opponent since Sept. 1, 2019, when the Bison fell 2-0 at No. 13 Georgetown. The Bison could have another shot at their first-ever win against a ranked foe next Friday at Hofstra. The Pride are ranked No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches poll this week and will play at Columbia and home against Penn before hosting the Bison.
- Bucknell played five Patriot League opponents in a modified spring schedule last March. The Bison went 1-2-2, with a 1-0 win over American, scoreless draws with Lafayette and Lehigh, and 1-0 losses to Loyola and Navy.
- Low-scoring games were the theme of the spring, as the Bison conceded only two goals and scored once in the five games.
- Bucknell's 0.37 team goals-against average was the best in the Patriot League and sixth-best in Division I in the abbreviated spring season. The only teams with better GAAs were Georgetown (0.28), South Dakota State (0.28), Evansville (0.34), Northern Kentucky (0.35) and Bowling Green (0.36).
- Bucknell graduated five players from last year's squad: Alex Catanzarite, Chloe Christakos, Sarah Hazard, Bri Kropinack and Jenna Marek. Christakos, a center back, was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in the spring of 2021.
- Kropinack is using her final year of eligibility as a graduate student at VCU, and she scored the Rams' opening goal in a 2-1 win over Liberty last Sunday.
- Junior midfielder Petie Nassetta joined Christakos on the All-Patriot League squad in the spring. Nassetta was a Third Team choice.
- Bucknell was picked ninth in the Patriot League preseason poll, ahead of American and behind Navy, Boston University, Colgate, Army, Loyola, Lehigh, Lafayette and Holy Cross.
- Kelly Cook is in her seventh season on the Bison sideline. Cook owns a 53-43-11 (.547) overall record at Bucknell, including a 30-14-6 (.660) mark in Patriot League play. Cook knows the Patriot League very well, as she was a two-year captain and three-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection at Colgate, where she recorded 27 goals and 23 assists in her career. She ranked in the top 10 in program history in career points (77) and assists. As a junior in 2004, Cook (then Kelly Kuss) was named Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading the Raiders to the league title, and then her team knocked off Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first NCAA win in school and league history.
- The Mountaineers are off to a 1-3 start in 2021. They dropped overtime decisions Radford (3-2) and Robert Morris (2-1) before getting into the win column with a 1-0 away result at Davidson. Most recently, Mount St. Mary's fell 4-1 at Campbell on Sunday.
- Elisabeth Rockhill, a First Team All-Northeast Conference selection a year ago, scored The Mount's goal in the 62nd minute against a good Davidson team.
- Mount St. Mary's has four goals from four different players this season. In addition to Rockhill's tally against Davidson, Kalli Bell, Madison Bee and Hannah Cooksey have found the back of the net.
- Maggie Barron and Arden Lembryk have started two games each in goal. Lembryk made nine saves in the shutout of Davidson and has a 0.98 goals-against average. She was named the NEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week after that performance. Both keepers have made 17 saves on the season.
- The Mountaineers were picked ninth in the NEC preseason poll.
- Mount St. Mary's went 4-5 while playing a spring schedule a year ago.
- The "Route 15 Rivalry" resumes this year after a five-year hiatus. Bucknell and Mount St. Mary's have met 16 times previously, including every year from 2008-16.
- The Bison are 14-1-1 in the series, including five straight wins by a combined margin of 18-1.
- The most recent meeting in 2016 came at Emmitt Field, and the best team in Bucknell history (16-2-2) posted a 5-0 win behind a hat trick from star striker Kendall Ham, who would go on to be named an All-American that season. Alexis Gannon and Bailey Hurst also scored for the Bison.
- Bucknell's last trip to Emmitsburg came in 2015. The Bison won that one 2-0 on second-half goals from Ham and Madison Loos after a long weather delay.
- Mount St. Mary's points in the series came in back-to-back seasons in 2010 and 2011. The Mount won 3-0 in Lewisburg in 2010, and the teams drew 1-1 in Emmitsburg the following season.
- The Lions did not play at all last season due to COVID-19, and after a 657-day layoff they traveled to St. John's and played to a wild 3-3 tie last Friday. Columbia followed with a 1-0 loss at Stony Brook on Sunday.
- Ally Clark, Nata Ramirez and Madi Pilla were the goal-scorers against St. John's, with the last of the three coming on a penalty kick.
- Paige Nurkin started in goal against the Red Storm and made five saves. Audrey Byrne got the call at Stony Brook and tallied three saves with just the one goal allowed.
- Thanks to the yearlong hiatus, 21 of Columbia's 32 players on the roster had yet to appear in a college game entering this season.
- The Lions enjoyed a terrific season in 2019, finishing 9-3-4 overall and 3-1-3 in the Ivy League. They went unbeaten (3-0-3) in their final six matches, and the three losses were the second-fewest in a season in team history.
- Bucknell is 0-4 all-time against the Lions, with the most recent encounter featuring a crazy overtime finish.
- That came at Emmitt Field late in the 2019 season, when the two teams went to overtime all tied at 1-1 after Shira Cohen scored an 82nd-minute equalizer for the Lions. With 2.9 seconds left in the first overtime period, Columbia was awarded a penalty kick. Bison goalkeeper Raegan Dunwoodie, who was making her first career start, made a sensational save on the Maddie Temares PK, but the ball remained in play, and Gracie Wall got there first and slotted home the rebound at the buzzer to give Columbia the win.
- Columbia's three other series wins all game in New York City: 2-1 in 1995, 1-0 in 2001 and 2-1 in 2005. Bucknell's 2001 and 2005 teams both went on to win Patriot League championships.
