WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Bucknell women's soccer team received goals from Claire Mensi and Kelley Francis, but it was not quite enough as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference power Monmouth remained unbeaten with a 3-2 verdict on Sunday afternoon.
After a spirited effort against No. 12 West Virginia at home on Friday night, the Bison (1-2-1) went on the road for the first time this season and found themselves in a 2-0 hole at halftime. Bucknell came out firing in the second half and earned a penalty kick just past the hour mark.
Mensi converted from the spot for her second goal of the season, pulling the Bison within 2-1. It was the first goal conceded by Monmouth (4-0-0) all season. The Hawks were awarded a penalty of their own just five minutes later, and Brianna Russo scored to restore Monmouth's two-goal advantage.
The Bison pulled one back on the first collegiate goal from the freshman Francis, but only 12 seconds remained in regulation. Rylee Donaldson picked up the assist.
Lauren Karabin opened the scoring in the 20th minute off a feed from Olivia Ramiz, and Monmouth added a second in the 32nd on an own goal from a corner kick. The Hawks, who recently won four straight league titles from 2016-19, are the preseason favorites in the MAAC in 2021.
Jenna Hall had another strong game for the Bison with six saves. Maddie Ogden tallied four saves for the Hawks, who finished with a 16-9 shot advantage.
This was the first of four straight road games for Bucknell. The Bison next visit Mount St. Mary's on Fri. at 7 p.m.
