LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell rowing team has been preparing all spring for the Patriot League Championships, and that day arrives on Friday when the Bison will join six other conference rivals on the Cooper River. Fans can watch all of the action on ESPN+, with prelims starting at 8 a.m. and finals getting underway just after noon.Â
With the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the 2020 Patriot League Championships, this will be Bucknell's first crack at a league title since 2019. The Bison put up a strong showing that year on Lake Quinsigamond, earning silver medals in all three competitions en route to a second-place team finish behind Navy.Â
The Mids have captured five straight and six of the last seven Patriot League titles, with Boston University intervening in 2014. That stretch came on the heels of seven consecutive Bucknell championships from 2006-12.Â
One difference in this year's championship is that the field will consist of seven teams rather than nine. Georgetown and MIT, who are both associate members of the Patriot League in the sport of rowing, have not competed this season due to COVID-19. Georgetown tied for third place alongside Boston University, while MIT finished sixth at the 2019 PL Championships.Â
The Patriot League Championships utilizes a scoring format that awards points based on order of finish in three events: Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four. Points are weighted in favor of the Varsity Eight, and in the event of a tie after all three finals, the championship would be awarded to winner of the Varsity Eight. The championship team receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Sarasota, Fla., on May 28-30.
PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS SCORING FORMAT:
Varsity Four: 9-8-7-6-5-4
Second Varsity Eight: 18-16-14-12-10-8-6
Varsity Eight: 27-24-21-18-15-12-9
Bucknell has enjoyed a strong spring season thus far, consisting primarily of head-to-head competitions at home on the Susquehanna River. In official races contested at the standard distance of 2,000 meters, the Bison Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight are both unbeaten. The 2V8+ has wins over Colgate, Delaware, Connecticut and Fordham. The 1V8+ has beaten Colgate, Delaware and Connecticut, and the Bison were also victorious against both George Washington and George Mason at the George Cup on the Occoquan Reservoir on May 2.
Last weekend the Bison tuned up for the Patriot League meet with a scrimmage against Ithaca, the third-ranked team in the nation in Division III rowing. The modified races were broken up into four segments as a training opportunity, and afterward the team recognized its 16 seniors with the annual oar ceremony.Â
