STORRS, Conn. -- The Bucknell University baseball team fell 9-1 in its first of two games at UConn over the weekend. UConn used a four-run second to stake an early lead, before adding four more runs over the next two innings to pull away on a windy day at Elliot Ballpark.
Bucknell drops its first-ever decision to the Huskies, with the Bison taking the lone matchup against UConn 11-10 in 2009.
Bucknell, which erupted for 13 hits against Lehigh in its last time out, managed just two hits on the day as Connecticut starter Ben Casparius pitched an impressive outing, not allowing a hit through the first six innings.
That proved to be plenty for the UConn offense, which used three hits to score four runs in the second, before adding a lone run in the third and three in the fourth. Six of UConn's scoring plays were hits for extra bases as it improved to 11-1 at home this season.
The Bison scored their only run of the game in the seventh, when Henry Novicki singled on an 0-2 count to score Chris Cannizzaro from third. Peter Marren tallied Bucknell's other hit of the game in the frame, when he singled through the left side to move Cannizzaro to third.
Bucknell used five different pitchers, with Graeme Carroll (2.0 IP, 0H) and Nicholas Sadd each not allowing a hit out of the bullpen.
The Bison will face the Huskies to close the weekend at 12:05 p.m. on Sunday.
