WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior Maura Fiamoncini wrote her name in the record books once again with a runaway win in the javelin throw, Ashlyn Ramos continued her storybook junior year with a gold medal in the 10,000 meters, and the Bucknell women's track and field team got out to a solid start Friday on day one of the Patriot League Championships at Army's Shea Stadium.
"Our women had a very solid day," said Head Coach Kevin Donner. "We have a person in the final of every running event but the 800. Ramos ran a great 10k. She stayed patient the entire race to conserve her energy for tomorrow's 5k, and ran a 5:14 last mile for the win. Maura was incredible in the javelin. Her mark qualifies her for the Olympic Trials, and it ranks her seventh in Division I right now."
With six of the 22 events completed, the Bison sit in third place with 35.5 points. Navy (74) and Army (66) gained some separation on the field on day one, and Bucknell has a 15-point lead over fourth-place Holy Cross. Lafayette (15), Lehigh (11), Boston University (7), Loyola (5), American (0) and Colgate (0) round out the field.
Fiamoncini, a two-time All-American who is the best javelin thrower in Patriot League history, broke her own meet record on the way to her third straight league title in the event (last year's Patriot League Outdoor Championships were canceled due to COVID-19). Fiamoncini's second attempt of the day traveled 180 feet, 5 inches, which was four feet shy of her own personal best. Not only was her mark one of the best in the nation this season, but it outdistanced runner-up Nicole Sacchinelli of Army by a whopping 26 feet.
Ramos has enjoyed a breakthrough junior year. Last month she won the Patriot League Cross Country Championship and earned a bid to the NCAA Championship, and two weeks ago she crushed the school record in the 10,000 meters at the Virginia Challenge. On Friday, Ramos pulled away from the lead pack with about 1,600 meters remaining and posted an eight-second win over Navy's Jessica Nangle. Ramos finished in 35:37.52.
Emily Deschler also scored in the 10K for Bucknell with an eighth-place finish in 36:23.95.
One of the tightest competitions of the day came in the long jump, where Bucknell junior Gianna Macones finished third, just three-quarters of an inch behind champion Lindsey Smith of Army. Macones posted a top mark of 18-9 ¾ which was a career best and moved her into sole possession of ninth on Bucknell's all-time performers list.
The Bison had two scorers in the pole vault, with senior Alexandra Butz finishing sixth (12-3 ½) and sophomore Jennifer Scott tied for eighth (11-7 ¾). Christa Moore of Holy Cross won the event with a meet record leap of 13-3 ½.
Freshman Madison McGloin picked up points in the hammer throw with a seventh-place finish. Her first attempt was her best at 169-1.
The Bison also had several athletes qualify for Saturday finals, with some new top-10 times going on the board as well.
Freshman Karen Hull advanced in the 100-meter hurdles and was not far off the Bucknell record. Hull qualified in fourth place with a time of 14.27 seconds. Only Catherine Trentacoste (14.14) and Kafilat Oladiran (14.20) have run faster in team history.
Freshman Meghan Quinn moved on in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Quinn was the third-fastest qualifier in the 200 with a time of 24.95, which moves her into eighth place in school history. She qualified in fifth place in the 100 in 12.36, just off her own PR of 12.10.
Junior Michaela Bracken posted the third-fastest qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles, and her 1:03.10 moves her into 10th place in Bucknell history.
Sophomore Jessie Castellano hit a PR with a time of 57.29 in the 400-meter dash, and she qualified for the final with the sixth-fastest time in the field.
Also making a Saturday final was junior Karly Forker in the 1,500 with a time of 4:44.67, seventh-fastest in the field.
Freshman Abby Eisold is in scoring position in the heptathlon. She sits in seventh place after four events with a score of 2,699. She racked up 854 of those points in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.91. Navy holds the top three positions, led by Katherine Halbert with 2,985 points.
Sixteen more gold medals will be awarded on a busy Saturday. The final day of the meet gets underway at 9:45 a.m., and live coverage on ESPN+ will begin at 1 p.m.
