ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy topped the Bucknell women's lacrosse team, 14-8, to earn the South Division's final spot in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The Mids (8-3, 4-2 PL) pulled away from the Bison (3-6, 3-5 PL) behind a 5-0 run that stretched from the first half's 10:09 to 1:47 marks. Entering the game, Navy and Bucknell were tied for third in the South Division standings with a 1-2 divisional record.
The Bison twice led the Mids in the first half, at 2-1 at the 18:32 mark and at 4-3 with 12:12 remaining in the half. Bucknell, which was looking to top Navy for the first time in 13 chances, took their leads on Julia Bradbury and Taylor Kopan goals.
Following Kopan's free-position tally, the Mids strung together its game-deciding 5-0 run. Though Peeples netted the second half's first two goals to draw the Bison within three, at 9-6, Navy responded with three unanswered goals. The Mids held Bucknell scoreless from the second half's 25:18 to 8:55 marks, limiting its time to make a comeback.
For the Bison, Caitlin Tucker made a career-high 17 saves; she stopped 11 shots in the first half alone, a single one shy of her career-high total set in back-to-back games against La Salle and UMBC during the 2020 campaign. Peeples and Caroline Walsh led the attack, each netting a hat trick.
Navy was paced by Reagan Roelofs, who scored a hat trick and accounted for 11 of her team's 14 draw controls. Five other Mids enjoyed multi-goal outings, with Lindsay Beardmore and Karoline Nease tying for the game high with four points on two goals and two helpers.
Peeples also led Bucknell with four draw controls; she added two ground balls and one caused turnover. Emma Cashwell caused a team-best two turnovers and tied Ella Payer for the game high with three ground balls.
Navy's Christine Fiore led all players with three caused turnovers and tied Cashwell, Payer and teammate Gil Eby for the game high in ground balls. Three different goalies saw time in the Mid net, with Jo Torres making all seven of their saves.
Navy held leads in shots (40-23), shots on goal (31-15) and draw controls (14-10); the Mids also went 4-for-6 on their free-position bids compared to Bucknell's 1-for-3. Turnovers proved costly for the Bison, as they turned the ball over 20 times compared to Navy's eight.
The Mids will now face second-seeded Lehigh in the South Division quarterfinal on Monday, May 3. The winner of that game will face North Division champion Army West Point on Thursday, May 6.
With its loss to Navy, Bucknell concludes its 2021 campaign. The Bison scored victories over American (17-15), Colgate (13-11) and Lafayette (15-7) in Jackie Dando's second season as head coach.
