LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell softball team wrapped up its weekend with a pair of losses to Lehigh at Becker Field on Sunday. Bucknell played stout defense in the first game, but failed to score a run on the day. A big offensive output for the Mountain Hawks in game two dropped the Bison as well.
Niki Mabry, Jazmyn Stokes and Sarah Baluch all finished the day with multiple hits.
Bucknell hits the road next weekend for four games at Army. The series kicks off with a doubleheader in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday, May 1. It's the second-to-last regular season series for the Bison.
Game One: Lehigh 2, Bucknell 0
The first game of the day saw solid defense by both teams, but a two-run third inning for the Mountain Hawks ended up being the difference.
After two scoreless innings, the Mountain Hawks posted a pair of doubles and a pair of singles in the bottom of the third to score two runs. Bucknell recorded hits in each of the final five innings, including a pair of doubles from Baluch and Stokes, but almost all of them came with two outs and yielded no runs.
The Bison nearly tied the game in the bottom of the seventh by putting runners on first and second, but the Mountain Hawks secured the final two outs to win the game.
Mabry finished the first game 2-for-3 with a walk while batting leadoff. After Olivia Marinelli pitched the first 2.1 innings, Kelly Toomey came in and recorded a pair of strikeouts while allowing just two hits in 4.2 innings.
Game Two: Lehigh 10, Bucknell 0
Bucknell held Lehigh off the board over the first four innings in game two, but a big seven-run fifth put the Bison in a hole that they were unable to recover from.
The fifth inning began in rough fashion as the Mountain Hawks led off with a triple. They went on to post six hits, including four doubles, to take a 7-0 lead in the game. No runs scored in the sixth, but Lehigh added three more on three hits in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Bucknell finished the game with three hits and a pair of errors. Baluch, Stokes and Chase Knapp all made successful contact at the plate, and Stokes hit her second double of the afternoon.
Kaiya Burton received the loss for Bucknell after striking out four and giving up eight hits in 4.1 innings. Rookie Hunter Vestal came in to relieve and struck out one with six hits given up.
