LEWISBURG, Pa. – Robert Morris outlasted the Bucknell men's lacrosse team, 8-7, in a defensive battle on Friday night at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
The Colonials (6-5, 0-0 NEC) held off a late Bison (2-5, 1-4 PL) flurry to emerge victorious. Bucknell, which was celebrating its Senior Day, had two prime scoring opportunities in the final minutes of regulation but couldn't net the equalizer.
With 1:04 left to play, Liam Rosenthal denied a point-blank bid by Dutch Furlong. Bryant Boswell then thwarted a Robert Morris clearing attempt, knocking down a pass and collecting the ball by the visiting restraining line. The defenseman raced back the other way, but his shot sailed wide of the cage with 42 seconds left on the clock. A Colonial won the race to the ball, allowing his team to gain possession and run down the remaining time in the Bison end.
At halftime, the teams were locked in a 3-3 stalemate. Robert Morris netted three unanswered goals in the third quarter to build a 6-3 advantage. After the teams traded goals to start the fourth quarter, the Colonials regained their three-goal cushion with 12:41 left to play.
Furlong factored into the next two Bucknell goals, helping his team cut Robert Morris's lead to 7-6. At the 10:06 mark, he beat Rosenthal in close; he then assisted on an Alston Tarry strike with 7:29 remaining in regulation.
Brandon Sulhoff netted what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 7:16 mark. Furlong struck again with 4:55 left to play, but the Bison were unable to force overtime.
For Bucknell, Tarry posted a hat trick while Furlong logged two goals and an assist. Danny Striano recorded a game-best six ground balls while Joe Scattareggia paced all players with three caused turnovers. Nick Crovatto won five of nine faceoffs while Conor McCusker took four of 10.
For the Colonials, Sulhoff (2g-1a) and Ryan Smith (2g-1a) led the attack while Rosenthal made 13 saves. Owen Down filled the stat sheet with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Like the score, the teams were close in almost every statistical category. Robert Morris led in shots (34-31) and faceoffs (10-9) while the Bison held a 20-17 edge in shots on goal. The biggest difference was seen in ground balls, in which the Colonials recorded a 40-29 advantage.
Bucknell next resumes Patriot League play with a Saturday, April 24 game at Lehigh. The opening faceoff is slated for noon.
