BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 7/6 Lehigh used a 10-point outing from Christian Mule' to down the Bucknell men's lacrosse team, 18-12, on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
The Bison (2-6, 1-5 PL) stayed within striking distance of the unbeaten Mountain Hawks (9-0, 8-0 PL) for most of the game but ultimately couldn't pull off the upset. Daniel Parson made a career-high 13 saves while Jack Feda (3g-1a), Alston Tarry (3g-1a), Dutch Furlong (2g-2a) and Tommy Sopko (1g-3a) posted four points apiece.
Mule' registered his 10 points on seven goals and three assists. Tommy Schelling also had a strong game offensively, logging six points (2g-4a). Mike Sisselberger went 21-of-27 in the faceoff x and scooped up a game-best 15 ground balls, 10 more than the second-place player.
During the first quarter, the teams were twice locked in a tie. The Mountain Hawks netted the final two goals of that frame to build a 5-3 advantage; they then scored two of the second quarter's first three goals to go up by a 7-4 margin.
The Bison responded, using a Feda goal from near the restraining line and a Sumner Brumbaugh strike off of an over-the-net feed from Furlong to cut their deficit to 7-6 with 6:45 remaining before the intermission.
Lehigh ultimately netted three of the next four goals to carry a 10-7 advantage into halftime; the Mountain Hawks regained their three-goal cushion, tied for their largest of the half, by netting a transition goal with a single second remaining before the intermission.
After being held to a single goal in the third quarter, Bucknell piled in four during the final frame. The Bison twice cut their deficit to four goals, on a Sopko transition tally and a Feda man-advantage goal, but ultimately would not draw any closer to Lehigh.
Jack Spence made 11 saves to earn the win in net. Travis Talarico caused a team-best two turnovers and was also one of four Bison to collect three ground balls.
The Mountain Hawks led in shots on goals (31-24), ground balls (43-27) and faceoffs (24-9); the teams were even at 44-44 in shots.
