LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team hosted its first match at the Varsity Tennis Courts in almost two years, but fell 7-0 to visiting Navy in a Saturday Patriot League contest. The Bison took three singles matches to three sets and played one double match to the tiebreaker, but couldn't muster enough to beat the undefeated Midshipmen.
Bucknell moved to 2-6 (1-1 PL) with the loss, and Navy improved to 5-0 (3-0 PL).
Senior Marwan Abaza had one of the more exciting matches of the day at No. 1 singles. The senior battled it out with Navy senior Andrew Ton, but fell 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2). At No. 2 singles, sophomore Michael Owen also went three sets before losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to junior Derrick Thompson.
The third Bison to take his opponent beyond the first two sets was Guillermo Torres. After losing the first set 6-0, Torres rallied and won the second 7-5 in an effort to capture his second singles win this season. The sophomore, however, fell 6-1 in set three and Navy claimed all six singles points.
Abaza and Cooper Bradshaw teamed up at No. 1 doubles and took their opponents to the tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (7-3). Nick Mueller and Tim Zelikovsky lost 7-5 in No. 2 doubles, and Owen and Sam Yildirimlar took a 6-2 loss at No. 3.
The Bison get an opportunity to bounce back at home on Sunday with a noon match against Loyola (Md.).
