SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis improved to 2-1 in Patriot League play with a decisive 6-1 victory over Loyola (Md.) at the Central PA Tennis Center on Sunday. Bucknell claimed five of six in singles play and swept the doubles matches to complete a 1-1 weekend.
"It was a nice rebound today, as Loyola always plays us tough," said head coach Bruce Myers. "Great wins from Sam and Per, and it was very helpful to get the doubles point, which set the tone."
A 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles by Marwan Abaza and Cooper Bradshaw previewed an overall strong day for Bucknell. The duo was followed by a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles by Michael Owen and Guillermo Torres, and Tim Zelikovsky and Nick Mueller gutted out a 7-6 (4) win at No. 2 to give the Bison the first point of the match.
Abaza continued his afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Benny Glezer at No. 1 singles to earn his second singles victory of the season. Finishing right after Abaza was Mueller, who won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 and improved to 6-3 this spring. Mueller leads the team in singles wins.
Senior Sam Yildirimlar earned his second singles win with a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 win at No. 5. Also notable was a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 by Per Astrom, giving the sophomore his first singles win of 2021. Owen defeated his opponent at No. 2 singles, and the Bucknell's only loss was a nail-biting 5-7, 7-5, 10-8 decision between Torres and Matt Cardano on court four.
Bucknell concludes the regular season with matches against Lafayette and Lehigh next weekend. Bucknell visits the Leopards on Friday, April 16 before hosting the Mountain Hawks in Lewisburg on Saturday, April 17.
