Baseball Continues Road Trip with Four Games at Holy Cross this Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell University baseball team is set to hit the road on Saturday for four games at Holy Cross.

About the Bison

Bucknell is coming off a week in which it went 1-3 against No. 14 Pittsburgh and preseason Patriot League favorite Navy.
Bucknell managed leads in two of those defeats, but couldn't hold on as the Panthers and the Mids both managed to come back late in those games.
The 5-5 start is the quickest the Bison have reached the five-win mark since 2017, in which Bucknell started league play 8-4 before going on to finish with a 10-10 record.
Bucknell earned a win over Navy at home for the first time since March 17, 2018, when the Bison took a 10-2 win over the Mids in the series opener led by Evan Klugerman's two-double day.
In the 11-1, seven-inning contest on Saturday against Navy, Chris Difiore put together one of his best pitching performances of his young career in going six innings while allowing just six his in earning his second win of the season.
First year Anthony Sherwin had a huge game against Navy on Saturday, hitting his first career home run, a three-run shot, before plating two more on an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Sherwin earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors for his performance, in which he hit .375 in the three-game series against the Mids with two home runs and eight RBIs. Sherwin became the first player to go yard for the Bison in back-to-back games since Chris Cannizzaro managed the feat in 2020 in Bucknell's series against Virginia in February.
Cannizzaro also garnered Patriot League honors this week in becoming Bucknell's second straight Player of the Week after a career week for the preseason All-Patriot League pick.
Cannizzaro raised his average from .262 to .382 in Bucknell's four games, where the junior hit .647 with 11 hits, six doubles, eight runs scored, and six RBIs. Cannizzaro also launched his second home run of the season in the series finale against Navy in contributing to the first time the Bison have hit three home runs in a game since the Bison hit four at home vs. Army West Point on March 30, 2019.
Henry Novicki hit Bucknell's other home run against Navy on Sunday, and has shown power at the plate in his sophomore year. The native of Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania has hit three home runs already this year to lead the team, and ranks in a tie for first with Casey Rother of Lehigh in the Patriot League. Novicki has reached base safely in 12 straight games.
Cannizzaro makes several appearances for the Bison in the Patriot League rankings, where he is first in hits (21), slugging percentage (.709), second in doubles (6), third in triples (3), and third in runs scored (15).
Cannizzaro was leading the Patriot League in RBIs, was third in hits, and fifth in runs scored and average when the season was cut short in 2020.
The Bison have scored 25 runs in the first inning this season, which is 13 more than in any other inning this season. Bucknell continued that trend over the past week, scoring three in game two against Navy, and scored one run apiece against Pittsburgh and the Mids in game three as well. Bucknell has scored in the first inning in eight of its 14 games this season.
Peter Marren is one of only two Bison along with Cannizzaro to start all 14 games this season, and is second on the team in average (.320) Marren has turned in a solid senior season to date, and has 16 hits with two triples and ten RBIs. Marren has turned in five multi-hit performances this season.
The Bison have showcased their depth this season, with 13 players appearing in eight or more games this season.
Bucknell has led in eight games this season after six innings, but is only 4-4 in those games.
First year Jacob Corson , hitting .292 this season, is hitting .417 with two outs in 2021. Corson was the Patriot League Rookie of the Week two weeks ago, and has put together a solid freshman season. The native of Muncy, Pennsylvania has also put together a seven-game hitting streak earlier this season.
Bucknell is 1-4 in road games this season, and the games against Holy Cross will mark five straight games away from Depew Field, which is the longest stretch of road games the Bison are scheduled to play this season.

About Holy Cross/Series History

The Crusaders are 0-7 this season, but have only played one home game in 2021. Holy Cross has played five Patriot League games (two at Army, three at Lafayette), dropping three of those games by two runs or less and all five by four runs or less.
Bucknell last played Holy Cross on April 14, 2019, taking all three games of a weekend series at Depew Field. Bucknell split two games in Worcester earlier that season, taking game one 8-4 on Sunday, March 24.
Caleb Broughton made an appearance for the Bison in the win, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored.
Thomas Latham leads Holy Cross with a .358 average with seven hits, while Nate Wolf (.353) is also hitting about .300 this season. Cam Meyer is the only Crusader to have played and started all seven games this season.
