BERLIN, Md. – Sophomore Jackson Bussell won his first career individual title, leading the Bucknell men's golf squad to the team crown at the Battle at Rum Pointe, hosted by Iona this weekend at Rum Pointe Seaside Links.
Bussell posted an even-par 72 on Sunday to finish at 1-under for the tournament, and he claimed medalist honors after a birdie on the third playoff hole against Iona's Justin Burkhamer. Bussell, who shot 71 in Saturday's first round, started with a birdie at the first hole on Sunday morning and sat at 1-over before making a clutch birdie at the par-3 17th. Bussell parred the 18th, but Burkhamer made birdie at the last to force the playoff.
Bussell and Burkhamer both made pars at holes 18 and 6 to start the playoff, and then Bussell ended it with a birdie at the par-4 9th, atoning for a bogey there earlier in the day.
Scores were up all over the field as weather conditions changed from Saturday. After opening with a 1-under 287, Bucknell shot 301 on Sunday, but that was still plenty good enough for a three-shot win over Youngstown State. The Penguins closed with a 295 – one of only three sub-300 scores in windy conditions Sunday – and totaled 591 over 36 holes, trailing Bucknell's 588.
Lafayette (594), Navy (598), Mount St. Mary's (600) and Monmouth (600) rounded out the top five in a 10-team field.
Blake Wisdom (72-75) and Jack Gardner (70-77) both finished T-9th with 147 totals. Chris Tanabe shot 77 and Josh Holtschlag 82 on Sunday. Jason Lohwater, playing as an individual held the first-round lead after shooting 69 on Saturday, but he dropped to T-17th after finishing with an 80. Indy Dylan Ford had a nice finish with a 75.
This is the second straight week that a Bucknell player was involved in a playoff. Gardner fell on the second playoff hole at The Carpetbagger Classic last week, and now Bussell becomes Bucknell's first medalist since Tanabe at the Dartmouth Invitational in September 2019.
The team title is Bucknell's fifth under head coach Michael Binney and the first since the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge in September 2018.
The Bison return to action next Saturday at the Rolling Green Intercollegiate at Rolling Green GC in Springfield, Pa.
