FIRST-ROUND RESULTS
BERLIN, Md. – For the second time in as many weeks to start the 2021 spring season, the Bucknell men's golf team has the lead at the halfway point of a tournament. This time the Bison posted a 1-under-par 287 team total on Saturday to grab a five-shot cushion on second-place Lafayette after 18 holes at The Battle at Rum Pointe, hosted by Iona on the Maryland shore.
Six of the 64 players in the field posted a red number, and three of them represented Bucknell. Jason Lohwater, playing as an individual, sits on top of the pack after firing a 3-under 69. Jack Gardner, who lost in a playoff last week at The Carpetbagger Classic, is right back in the mix after shooting 70, and Jackson Bussell is also on the good side of par after opening with a 71.
Gardner and Bussell both had counting scores for Bucknell's top group, as did Blake Wisdom with an even-par 72 and Chris Tanabe with a 74. Josh Holtschlag's 80 was discarded. Dylan Ford also posted an 80 playing as an individual.
Bucknell's four scoring players combined for 15 birdies on the day, led by five from Wisdom and four each from Gardner and Tanabe.
Lafayette received a 70 from Kazuki Osawa and a 71 from Brendan Cronin to hover within five shots of the lead with a 292 team tally. Youngstown State (296), Navy (297), Mount St. Mary's (298) and Iona (298) round out the top five.
The second and final round gets underway Sunday at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
