LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team split a pair of games on Sunday at Depew Field at it closed its four-game set against the Black Knights.
Bucknell, now 4-6 on the season, took three of four from Army after sweeping the Black Knights on Saturday.
Game One: Bucknell 7, Army 1
The Bison used four runs in the first inning and three in the second to effectively pull away from Army as it won its third straight over the Black Knights.
Jacob Corson, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, reached on a fielder's choice before a single by Peter Marren and a walk by Henry Novicki loaded the bases for designated hitter Kendall Pierson.
Pierson blistered a hard hit ball down the right field line for his first career extra-base hit, a triple, that cleared the bases and gave Bucknell a 4-0 lead early on.
Bucknell extended its lead in the bottom of the second with three insurance runs, with Pierson once again playing a major part. The native of Tewksbury, New Jersey doubled to left field for two more RBIs that scored both Marren and Corson, with the latter leading off the inning with a double of his own.
Caleb Broughton then singled home Pierson for Bucknell's final run of the inning, and helped continue Bucknell's recent success in the first two innings of play. In yesterday's 14-5 win over Army, the Bison scored seven runs and the first and two in the second to race out to an early 9-2 lead.
The seven runs would be plenty for Bucknell starter Chris Difiore, who kept the Black Knights to a single run in the top of the third. Difiore made his first career start on Sunday, going six innings while scattering five hits and striking out a career-high six batters in earning the win (1-1), the first of his career.
Anthony Casciola relieved Difiore in the seventh, pitching a clean inning as the Bison won their third straight conference game for the first time since April 27-28, 2019.
Pierson had a big day, going 2-for-3 from the plate with five RBIs, the most by a Bison player this season. Broughton, Logan Kellerman, Corson, and Marren each added a hit for the Bison.
Game Two: Army 14, Bucknell 3
This time it was Army who jumped out to an early lead, as the Black Knights scored two in the second inning and four in the third en route to a 14-3 win over Bucknell in the series finale.
Bucknell hit two home runs in the game for the first time since Jake Wortman and Chris Cannizzaro homered in Bucknell's 14-10 win over Virginia on February 22, 2020, but the two solo shots by the Bison proved to not be enough in the defeat.
Novicki launched a solo home run to right center just to the right of the netting in center field in the third, while Cannizzaro belted his first home run of the season, and the third of his career, in the bottom of the fifth.
However, Army's lead proved insurmountable as the Black Knights capitalized on five Bison errors to score a season-best 14 runs, six of which were unearned.
Mason Kelly managed two hits in two at-bats for the Bison, while first year Grant Voytovich also managed multiple hits on the day. Bucknell used six different pitchers in the defeat.
The Bison will now look ahead to a midweek matchup at Pittsburgh scheduled for Wednesday, March 24.
