Softball Falls 8-0 at Longwood in Weekend Finale

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell softball team completed its three-game weekend series at Longwood on Sunday, falling 8-0 in five innings to the Lancers. After the Bison posted 14 hits across two games yesterday, they found just one on Sunday and were unable to generate enough offense to keep pace with the Lancers.
Bucknell (2-3) also committed three crucial errors in the game after posting none on Saturday. In all, three Bison baserunners were left stranded in the game. Longwood (9-13) totaled eight hits, including four that went for extra bases.
Bucknell rookie Hunter Vestal received her first loss of the season after starting the game and going 3.2 innings. Just three of the eight runs that scored were earned by Vestal. Longwood's Sydney Backstrom moved to 7-6 on the season.
Longwood's bats were hot from the start as they picked up three runs in the first inning, two in the second, and three more in the fourth.
The Lancers got two runners on after connecting during their first two at-bats of the game. An error led to the first Longwood run, then a two-out double sent two more across to put the Bison behind 3-0 before their second trip to the plate. Longwood added to its lead with a two-run homer in the second inning, again scoring with two away in the inning.
Bucknell settled in in the third and allowed no hits, but a triple, a pair of singles and two more errors in the fourth led to three more Longwood runs. The Bison were unable to hang one on the board in the fifth, and Longwood sealed the series sweep. Bucknell's one hit of the day came from Chase Knapp, who singled in the top of the fourth and ends the weekend with four hits total.
Bucknell returns to play next Sunday with a doubleheader at Delaware. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.
