LEWISBURG, Pa. – For her performance at the Bucknell Invitational, Maddie Hartigan was recognized as the Bison Athlete of the Week for the fifth time in her decorated career.
Hartigan won three individual races at the three-day meet, taking first in Friday's 500 freestyle, Saturday's 200 freestyle and Sunday's 100 freestyle. In addition, she went third in Sunday's 1,650 freestyle and was a member of five top-four relay teams.
In the 200 freestyle, Hartigan shaved .12 of a second off of the school record she set at the 2020 Patriot League Championships, timing in at 1:48.10. She also nearly broke her own school record in the 500 freestyle; her time of 4:47.65 would have stood second in the Bucknell annals if she hadn't already swam the program's fastest time (4:46.48) at the 2020 Patriot League Championships.
Hartigan led off the 200 freestyle relay team that set the school record on Friday with a time of 1:33.16; her lead-off leg time of 23.41 slotted her fifth in school history in the 50 freestyle. Her other four relay teams also clocked program top-10 times, with the 800 freestyle relay team scoring a victory.
Hartigan is the first member of the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team to earn Bison of the Week accolades this school year. She accounted for two of the team's three Bison of the Week awards in 2018-19, one of its two in 2019-20 and its lone one during the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign.
Notably, Hartigan took home Bison of the Week honors following all three Bucknell Invitationals contested during her time in Lewisburg. As a first year in 2018, she won the 500 freestyle and the 1,650 freestyle and placed second in the 200 freestyle. As a sophomore in 2019, she took first in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle and went third in the 100 freestyle.
Hartigan and the Bison return to the pool in the New Year, facing off against Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m.
