LEWISBURG, Pa. – Maddie Hartigan was recognized as the Bison Athlete of the Week following her standout performance at the Bucknell Invitational.
The sophomore helped the women's swimming & diving team place third by winning three gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal. She captured a gold medal on each day of the three-day event, winning Friday's 500 freestyle, Saturday's 200 freestyle and Sunday's 1,650 freestyle. In addition, she led off the second-place 800 freestyle relay team and went third in the 100 freestyle.
Hartigan also rewrote the Bison's record book. In the 500 freestyle, she clocked an NCAA 'B' cut time of 4:46.62 to best her previous school standard by nearly three seconds. During the preliminaries, she posted a time of 4:47.30, also faster than the school record (4:49.16) she set as a freshman at last year's Patriot League Championships.
Hartigan nearly set a new Bucknell standard in the 200 freestyle. Her time (1:48.35) was a fraction of a second slower than Abigail Rosenberg's record (1:48.29); it represented over a second improvement for Hartigan, who was previously slotted third in school history with a time of 1:49.41 set at last year's Bucknell Invitational.
Hartigan then clocked Bucknell's second-fastest times in the 1,000 (10:03.91) and 1,650 (16:36.44) freestyles. She previously held the second spot in both events with times of 16:44.99 and 10:06.57 set at last year's Patriot League Championships.
In addition, the 800 freestyle relay team clocked a time of 7:26.46, the fifth-fastest in school history. Hartigan also anchored the fourth-place 200 and 400 medley relay teams and the swam on the fifth-place 200 freestyle and sixth-place 400 freestyle relay squads.
Hartigan was previously recognized as the Bison Athlete of the Week twice during her freshman campaign. She was honored following her efforts at the Bucknell Invitational and Patriot League Championships that season.
Hartigan and the Bison return to action in the New Year by hosting Johns Hopkins on Friday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m.
