Renner Wins Gold in 200IM, Bison Women in Second after Day 1 of ECAC Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – A gold/bronze finish from Clara Renner and Kelly Byrne in the 200-yard individual medley highlighted the opening night of the ECAC Open Championships for the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison are in second place behind Navy after the first of three finals sessions.

The Mids accrued 258 points on Friday night, followed by Bucknell with 139, Penn with 116, and Loyola with 110. Fifth-place Fairfield is well back with 67 points. Fifteen teams have scored thus far.

Renner was the runner-up in the 200 IM at last year's ECAC meet, and now as a sophomore she changed the color to gold with a win in 2:02.07, more than a full second faster than runner-up Olivia Safarikova of Penn. Byrne, who won gold in the 400 IM at the Patriot League Championships last week, claimed third in 2:03.89.

Hanna Bingley (11th) and Joslin Halsey (14th) also scored in the 200 IM, giving the Bison 45 points in the event.

The Bison had two other bronze medalists on Friday night, as Virginia Hastings took third in the 50 free, and the 200 free relay started the night with a third-place finish.

Hastings went 23.60 to finish a close third behind Rutgers' Anna Vlachou and Loyola's Haley Robinson. Kyla Kelly won the B Final in 23.80 to finish ninth, and Ashley Piacentino placed 15th.

Hanna Klingensmith, Piacentino, Halsey, and Talia Bugel took third in the 200 free relay behind only Loyola and Navy. Bucknell's 400 medley relay was disqualified in the morning prelims due to an early start on the final exchange.

Also scoring for Bucknell were Jennifer Bolden (6th, 4:58.25), Tessa Feld (7th, 4:59.50), Emma Briganti (11th, 5:04.55), and Klingensmith (13th, 5:05.09) in the 500 free.

The ECAC Championships continue on Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
