LEWISBURG, Pa. – Maddie Hartigan was named the Bison Athlete of the Week after winning two events for the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team at the Bucknell Invitational.
The freshman won the 500 freestyle and the 1,650 freestyle at the three-day event, helping the Bison score a third-place finish. She also placed second in the 200 freestyle and was a member of two top-five relays teams.
Hartigan's time of 4:50.28 in the 500 freestyle was a fraction of a second slower than the school record, a time of 4:50.26 clocked by Kelly Pontecorvo at the 2013 Patriot League Championships. She touched the wall more than five seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Towson's Meghan Jones (4:55.52).
Hartigan won the 1,650 freestyle with the third-fastest time (16:50.52) in school history. She clocked the first 1,000 in 10:14.51, moving her up to fifth in the Bison annals from ninth (10:23.19). In addition, her time of 1:49.41 in the 200 freestyle was good for third all-time.
Hartigan is the first women's swimmer to be tabbed as the Bison Athlete of the Week in 2018-19. Last year, Maggie Wyngowski, then a freshman, earned this distinction on Oct. 16 and Dec. 4; she was honored on Oct. 16 after winning a total of five individual events during Bucknell's meets at Bryant and Boston University and on Dec. 4 after breaking the 400 IM school record at the prestigious USA Swimming Winter Nationals.
