LEWISBURG, Pa. – Led by a 1-under-par 69 from Jason Lohwater, Bucknell counted four scores of 72 or better and posted a 1-over 281 team score on Sunday on day one of the Bucknell Invitational.
Scores were low throughout most of the 13-team field, with eight teams compiling 283 or better. The Bison are in sixth place, one behind Colgate and five in back of co-leaders Youngstown State and Monmouth, which both tallied 4-under 276 on Sunday.
Playing in cool, damp conditions, Lohwater made the turn at 2-over, then came home with a sensational 3-under 31 on the back nine. He made birdies on holes 11, 15 and 18, giving him four on the day. Lohwater is tied for sixth place individually. He was one of 15 players in the field to post a red number, with Monmouth's Ron Robinson leading the way with a 6-under 64.
Jackson Bussell and Blake Wisdom both followed with 70s for Bucknell, and freshman John Bradbeer provided the fourth counting score with a 72. Josh Holtschlag shot a solid 74 that was discarded.
Four other Bison also saw action on Sunday as part of the B squad. Freshman Michael Rudnick had a big day with an even-par 70 that included a team-high five birdies. Rudnick played the final eight holes in 3-under and shot 32 on the inward nine.
Jack Gardner was 1-under at the turn before finishing with a 72. Freshman Jake Maddaloni shot 74, and Max Orwicz shot 80.
Youngstown State and Monmouth sit two shots ahead of third-place Army West Point, with Mount St. Mary's fourth and Colgate fifth.
Bucknell was paired Sunday with Army and players from the Veterans Golf Association. The VGA squad posted a 296 in the first round and is tied for 10th place. Colter Kautzmann led the team with a 70.
The three-day tournament continues on Monday with 8 a.m. tee times. Bucknell's top group gets going at 10:40, playing alongside Colgate and Mount St. Mary's. The Bison B team gets started at 8:50 a.m., paired with the VGA team and Saint Francis (Pa.).
