6/15/2020 5:20:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Throughout this week, we are going to take you back through the decades with the Bucknell women's basketball program. Each day we will have special guests from each of the five decades in the program's history, with current head coach Trevor Woodruff leading the discussions. We hope you enjoy a trip down memory lane with many of the stars of Bison women's basketball, including four who have been in enshrined in the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame. Special thanks to Geisinger for sponsoring the series.Â
2010s
The women's basketball program's recent run of success has been fueled by a string of dominant frontcourt players, and three of them join us on Friday for our final "Through the Decades" chat: Audrey Dotson '15, Claire DeBoer '17, and Kaitlyn Slagus '19. As a freshman, Dotson was part of a team that finished 5-25, but by her senior year she captained a team that won 18 games, teeing up this current stretch of five straight 20-win seasons. Dotson was a First Team All-Patriot League selection who scored 1,285 career points. DeBoer was a three-time All-Patriot League selection and the league's Player of the Year as a senior in 2017. That season, she was also named PL Tournament MVP after recording 30 points and 10 rebounds in the league championship game win over Navy. DeBoer is Bucknell's No. 3 all-time scorer with 1,678 career points and the No. 4 rebounder with 899. Slagus, the 2019 Patriot League Player of the Year, became Bucknell's all-time leading rebounder as a senior, and she finished her career with 949 boards. Her 1,487 career points rank seventh on Bucknell's career list, and she too was a PL Tournament MVP after scoring 23 points in a win over American in the 2019 title game.Â
2000s
On Thursday we are joined by all-stars Molly Creamer '03, Lindsey Hollobaugh '07 and Hope Foster '08. Creamer is the most decorated player in program history, a three-time Patriot League Player of the Year who was a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer in 2013. She averaged 27.1 points per game as a senior and set school and league records with 2,462 career points. A first-round draft pick of the WNBA's New York Liberty, Creamer led the Bison to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2002. Hollobaugh was the 2004 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, she later became a two-year co-captain, and as a senior she led the team to a 20-win season, a Patriot League regular-season title, and the team's first-ever appearance in the WNIT. Despite missing some time due to a knee injury, Hollobaugh still managed to score 1,386 career points, which ranked sixth in school history at the time and still ranks ninth. Foster, a 2019 Hall of Fame inductee, is one of the premier centers in team history. Foster tallied 1,256 career points and was best-known for her rebounding and shot-blocking prowess. She broke the Bucknell career record for blocked shots as a sophomore, and her 344 career blocked shots nearly tripled the second-highest total of 132 by Marie Kocornik. Foster's 904 career rebounds marked the school record until 2018-19, when Kaitlyn Slagus eclipsed her standard. Foster earned a spot on the Patriot League All-Rookie Team as a freshman, followed by three straight years on the All-Patriot League First Team. She was the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and the overall Player of the Year as a junior. Foster served as a team co-captain in 2007-08, when the Bison captured the Patriot League Tournament title and went to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.Â
1990s
Wednesday's conversation includes three tremendous players who played big roles in a resurgent era for the Bison women's basketball program in the mid-to-late 90s: K.C. Vlah '96, Kim Delfs '99 and Lori Houck '00. Vlah was a rare three-year team captain, and after a few tough seasons, she led the team to an 18-9 record (10-2 PL) and a Patriot League regular-season title as a senior. Vlah still ranks No. 2 on Bucknell's all-time steals list with 312, just four shy of Hall-of-Famer Lynne Walshaw. Delfs was a member of the Patriot League All-Rookie Team in 1995-96, and she was a Second Team All-PL performer the following season. She graduated with 1,016 career points and co-captained the 1998-99 squad. The Hall-of-Famer Houck was a four-time All-Patriot League guard and one of the all-time leading scorers for the Bison. She graduated with 1,447 career points, a total that ranked second in program history at the time of her graduation. She also ranked second at the time in assists with 336, and she collected more than 400 rebounds from her guard position. Houck was captain of the team as a senior in 1999-2000, when the Bison advanced to the Patriot League championship game for the first time. That year she also earned the Patriot League Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Award and then became the first Bison to earn the overall Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the conclusion of the school year.
1980s
Tuesday's chat features three outstanding alums from the 1980s: Marie Kocornik '88, Jennifer Walz '89 and Susie Hopper '90. All three of these standouts scored at least 1,200 career points, led by the Hall-of-Famer Walz, who tallied 2,112 points and was Bucknell's all-time leading scorer for 14 years until Molly Creamer '03 eclipsed her mark (stay tuned, Molly joins us on Thursday!). Kocornik scored 1,310 career points, which were third-most at the time of her graduation, and she left as the all-time leader in rebounds with 842. Hopper logged 1,228 points, which ranked fourth all-time when she graduated.  Â
1970s
Up first, there are no better representatives of the decade of the 1970s than Bobbi Castens Seidell '79 and Karin Wegener Knisely '79. Both were three-sport standouts at Bucknell, having enjoyed record-setting field hockey and lacrosse careers in addition to their standout performances on the hardwood. Not only are these classmates in the Hall of Fame, but they became the first two women to be inducted in 1985. Â
