WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Bucknell University baseball team held a one-run lead heading into the ninth inning on Sunday, but couldn't manage to take the final game of its three-game set with Villanova (8-5) as the Wildcats scored one run in the ninth before adding two more in extra innings for a 6-4 win.
Bucknell (3-11) rallied from a three-run deficit and took a one-run lead on an RBI single from Jake Wortman in the seventh, but ultimately fell for the fifth straight game.
Bucknell faced a 3-0 deficit after six and a half innings after a solo shot from Villanova's Lucas Latrenta in the second, a sac fly, and an RBI single from Latrenta in the third. However, the damage could have been more in the third, as the Wildcats had the bases loaded with no outs after back-to-back walks and an error. Starting pitcher Brenden Tuttle settled in and managed to limit the Wildcats to just two in the inning with a pair of strikeouts as Villanova threatened to add more runs.
Bucknell used a four-run seventh to get back in the game. Evan Madigan started the inning by reaching on an error and stealing second, before Tyler Wincig walked to put two runners on. Chris Cannizzaro then provided a timely double down the left field line to score Madigan and move Wincig to third.
Alex Baumann kept things rolling after belting a single to right center that scored Cannizzaro and Wincig as Bucknell tied the game 3-3.
The Bison took the lead after Peter Marren moved Baumann a base on a well-executed sac bunt to put a runner in scoring position for the Bison. Jake Wortman's single one batter later managed to score Baumann from second as Bucknell took a 4-3 lead.
However, Villanova wouldn't go away, as the Wildcats managed a single run in the top of the ninth after getting the leadoff man on. Two wild pitches moved the Villanova runner to third, before an RBI groundout allowed the runner to score and tied the game, 4-4.
The Wildcats took control in the top of the tenth on a two-RBI triple to left center from Chris Rotondo, holding on for a 6-4 win over Bucknell to hand the Bison their fifth-straight defeat.
Baumann notched two hits and two RBIs as the DH, while Wortman and Cannizzaro each had multiple hits with an RBI. Bucknell managed nine hits overall, and left 12 men on base. Tuttle picked up a career-best seven strikeouts in five innings, allowing four hits and two earned while throwing 109 pitches.
Bucknell will now look ahead to two matchups against Central Michigan on Monday and Wednesday at 1 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
