Furman Outlasts Women's Lacrosse, 19-14, in Offensive Slugfest

GREENVILLE, S.C. – In a back-and-forth slugfest, Furman outlasted the Bucknell women's lacrosse team, 19-14, on Tuesday afternoon at Paladin Stadium.
The Bison (3-5, 0-0 PL) received a five-point outing from Eve Calabria (4g-1a) and hat tricks from Kate Fiore and Caroline Walsh but couldn't overcome a late surge by the Paladins (3-4, 0-0 SoCon). The game was marked by lengthy scoring runs, with Furman stringing together two 5-0 runs and Bucknell putting together one 5-0 run and one 4-0 run over the course of the contest.
After the Paladins claimed an early 6-1 lead, the Bison responded with a 6-1 run to even the score at 7-7 with 28:34 on the clock in the second half. Furman responded by netting seven of the next eight goals, including five in a row between the second half's 24:21 and 18:44 marks, to build a 14-8 lead.
Bucknell regrouped, scoring the next four goals to cut the Paladins' edge to 14-12 with 8:20 remaining in regulation. The teams proceeded to trade two goals in a minute to make it a 15-13 Furman lead with 6:52 left to play.
The Paladins proceeded to put the game out of reach behind a 4-0 run. While Calabria netted her fourth goal of the game with a second left, the Bison had run out of time to complete their comeback.
Walsh added an assist to finish with a career best four points. Tegan Warren (1g-2a) and Lillie Hunt (2g) also had multi-point outings.
Fiore tied Abby Neff for the team lead in caused turnovers (2) and Morgan Steinhacker for the team lead in ground balls (2). She went a perfect 2-for-2 on her free position attempts en route to her first career hat trick. Jessie Britton (4) and Kali Peeples (3) paced the Bison in draw controls.
For Furman, Demis Harris led the attack with seven points (1g-6a) while Grace Pollak (3g-3a) and Kyra LaMotte (4g-1a) also had big games. Meghan Deehan led all players with four ground balls while Pollak and Kaylee Coleman tied Britton for the game high with four draw controls.
The Paladins led in shots (32-27), shots on goal (25-20) and draw controls (21-13). The teams were tied, 11-11, in ground balls while the Bison had another strong clearing game, going 16-for-17.
Bucknell returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. by hosting No. 19 Navy for its Patriot League opener.
