CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Bucknell University baseball team split two games against the University of Virginia on Saturday afternoon, falling in game one 14-3 before rebounding in game two with a 14-10 win. Bucknell earned its second win in 25 games against the Cavaliers in game two, with the last Bucknell win against Virginia coming in 1925.
Game One: Virginia 14, Bucknell 3
It was all Virginia in game one as the Cavaliers raced out to an 8-0 lead through the first four innings. Alex Baumann provided Bucknell's first run of the day in the fifth on an RBI single that scored Peter Marren, but the Cavaliers scored four more unanswered runs en route to taking a 12-1 lead after 7.
Chris Cannizzaro launched his first career home run for the Bison in the eighth inning, a solo shot, for Bucknell's second run. Senior Josh Hunter, a walk-on who made the team as a sophomore and who had made just three appearances in his Bucknell career, then knocked a double that scored JohnPaul Bell for his first career hit and RBI.
The Cavaliers added two more runs in the eighth as they took the second straight game from the Bison after Friday night's thrilling 6-5 win. Cannizzaro was 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI, while Marren, Hunter, Madigan, and Baumann notched Bucknell's other four hits on the day. Renn Lints, a wide receiver for the football team in the fall, made his first career appearance as a relief pitcher, replacing Will Greer in the sixth inning. The sophomore recorded one strikeout while keeping the Cavaliers off the board in his one inning of work.
Game Two: Bucknell 14, Virginia 10
Bucknell used an offensive outburst, scoring ten runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings to pull away from the Cavaliers in a 14-10 victory in game two. The 14 runs by the Bison this season are nine more than any other game so far, and the most by the squad since a 14-1 win over Niagara on March 1, 2019. Two separate three-run home runs from Chris Cannizzaro and freshman Jake Wortman in the third and sixth, respectively, helped Bucknell earn its second win of the season, and the first against an ACC school since 2015.
It was Virginia that took the lead first as the Cavaliers scored a run in the bottom of the first, and the Cavaliers seemed to be in control after limiting Bucknell to a lone Wortman single through the first two innings of play.
The Bison bats got going in the top of the third, as Kyle Lyons and Tyler Wincig each reached on singles before Cannizzaro launched his second home run in as many games over the left field fence to give Bucknell a 3-1 lead.
The two teams exchanged runs in the fourth. Bucknell secured its fourth run on a sac fly by Wincig that scored Brendan Lowery, before the Cavaliers responded on a solo home run by Zack Gelof as Bucknell maintained a two-run advantage, 4-2.
Bucknell did its damage in the sixth and seventh inning, combining for ten runs over that stretch. An error by the Cavaliers in the infield allowed Cannizzaro to reach as Bucknell loaded the bases with one out in the inning. The error proved costly for Virginia, as all five of Bucknell's runs in the frame were unearned. JohnPaul Bell brought home Evan Madigan from third on a sac fly for Bucknell's first run of the inning before the Cavaliers elected to go with a pitching change.
Peter Marren then singled on the first pitch he saw from the new arm to score Tyler Wincig from third as Bucknell took a 6-2 lead. Just two pitches later, freshman Wortman belted his first career home run, a three-run shot, that gave Bucknell a 9-2 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Virginia pulled three back in the bottom of the sixth, and threatened to pull even closer after a walk, a double, and a triple started the inning. However, starting pitcher Nate Grisius forced a foul out, an RBI groundout, and a fly out in the next four batters to limit the Cavaliers to just the three runs in the frame.
Bucknell gained more breathing room with another big inning in the seventh, as the bases were once again loaded after a single by freshman Kyle Lyons and two walks. Cannizzaro scored Lyons on a sac fly to right field before Bell was hit by a pitch to load the bases once more.
A wild pitch from Virginia scored Madigan from third, before Wortman knocked in his fourth and fifth RBIs on the day by singling up the middle. Eunsang Yu then provided Bucknell's fifth run of the inning on an RBI double that allowed Wortman to touch home. The Bison capitalized on three Virginia walks in the inning, along with the hit by pitch on Bell.
Virginia pulled three more runs back in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Ottsen, after replacing Grisius with one down in the inning, limited the Cavaliers to two runs, both unearned, to close the frame.
After a combined 16 runs in the sixth and seventh between the two teams, neither team could score in the eighth.
The Cavaliers made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth after blanking Bucknell in the top of the frame. After pulling two runs back in the frame, Virginia had the bases loaded with just one out. Ottsen was replaced by Andrew Funovits, who was looking to earn his first save of the season. Funovits closed the game nicely, striking out Devin Ortiz and pinch hitter Tate Ballestero on two curveballs as Bucknell earned a 14-10 win over the Cavaliers.
Bucknell now improves to 2-23 all-time against Virginia, and rattled off 14 hits on the day, the most by the team since managing 15 hits in a win over La Salle at Depew Field on April 24, 2019.
Wortman had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and his first career home run, while Cannizzaro has now hit a home run in back-to-back games. Lyons and Marren each posted three hits, while Cannizzaro was 2-for-4. Seven Bison picked up a hit in the game.
Grisius (1-1) earned his first win of the year after going 6.1 innings while allowing six hits and striking out five. Funovits earned his first save of the year in the victory.
The Bison will take on Virginia for the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
