SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis collected its first win of the spring season with a 5-2 victory over Siena Sunday evening. The Bison won two of three doubles matches and picked up four of six singles matches over Siena (0-3).
Marwan Abaza and Chunyu Chen won in the top doubles spot by a 7-6 (8) score, and the pair was followed by a 6-0 win from Michael Owen and Cooper Bradshaw to claim the doubles point. Freshman Guillermo Torres and sophomore Ryan Jurist nearly pulled off the sweep in doubles for the Bison, but ended up falling 7-6 (6).
Abaza was also victorious in the top singles slot with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-5 win over Siena's Sagar Bains, making it five straight singles victories to begin the season for the junior. Owen, Jurist, and Torres all claimed singles victories as well. Torres' 6-4, 6-2 singles win was the second of the freshman's spring season.
Owen won 6-2, 6-3, and Jurist grabbed a 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 win in the number four singles spot.
"It was a match we didn't play particularly well. Full credit to Siena for battling every point," said head coach Bruce Myers. "We have a full week of practice to fix the things we need to improve before we play a very good Monmouth squad."
Bucknell travels to West Long Branch, N.J. on Saturday, Feb. 8 for a 4 p.m. match against the Hawks. The team then turns around to host Saint Francis at the Central PA Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m.
