Men's Tennis Falls 6-1 on the Road at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Bucknell men's tennis suffered a 6-1 loss to the Monmouth Hawks at the Little Silver Tennis Club Saturday evening. Freshman Michael Owen was the lone victor, winning his fifth straight singles match after falling in the season opener. With the loss, Bucknell moved to 1-3 on the young season.
Owen improved to 5-1 with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Monmouth junior Charles Gortzounian in the number two singles spot. The freshman has not lost a singles match since the season opener against Fordham, where he went three sets in a narrow defeat.
Fellow freshman Guillermo Torres took his opponent, sophomore Austin Klampman, to three sets, but wound up falling 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 in number six singles.
In number one singles, junior Marwan Abaza dropped his first singles match of the season by a score of 7-6, 6-2 to reigning MAAC Player of the Week Max Benaim. Abaza is now 5-1 in singles play this spring.
Also breaking an unbeaten streak was Cooper Bradshaw and Owen in doubles. The pair fell to 3-1 with a 6-2 loss in number one doubles, and Ryan Jurist and Abaza narrowly lost 7-6 in number two doubles.
Bucknell competes again tomorrow in a home match against Saint Francis. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at the Central PA Tennis Center.
