Cary, N.C. – The Bucknell University baseball team split a doubleheader with Monmouth on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 in game one before rebounding with a 5-4 victory in game two.
Game One: Monmouth 3, Bucknell 1
Bucknell managed its first run of the day in the eighth inning, but couldn't manage to overcome a 2-0 deficit after five innings in a 3-1 defeat. Jack Simpson struck out three in five innings of work while allowing two earned in his first start of the season as Bucknell dropped a two-run decision.
The Bison were limited to two hits on the day, with a hit each from Kendall Pierson and Eunsang Yu.
Monmouth opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after Simpson managed to pick off Johnny Zega at second base. However, heads up base running by Jalen Jenkins gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead after one. Jenkins then delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to double the Hawks lead at 2-0.
Bucknell managed just two hits through the first five innings, but managed to get a run on the board in the top of the eighth with neither of those hits taking place in the inning.
Pierson, making his second career appearance, led the inning off with a walk before Yu walked in his next plate appearance. Pierson then stole third, setting up Alex Baumann to bring home Pierson on a fielder's choice for Bucknell's lone run to halve the deficit to 2-1.
Monmouth tallied an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sac fly, and the Bison couldn't manage a hit in the top of the ninth as Bucknell fell to the Hawks in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Game Two: Bucknell 5, Monmouth 4
Bucknell used a three-run first highlighted by a two-RBI double from freshman Eunsang Yu before RBI singles from Peter Marren and Evan Madigan in the fifth and sixth, respectively, gave the Bison the offense it needed in a 5-4 win over Monmouth in game two of the doubleheader.
Singles from Tyler Wincig and Peter Marren gave Bucknell two men on with two outs in the inning, before a single from Chris Cannizzaro gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead to score Wincig. Yu then brought both Marren and Cannizzaro home on a double to give Bucknell a 3-0 lead for its first lead of the season.
Monmouth responded with two runs in the top of the second after a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single to the shortstop. However, starting pitcher Brenden Tuttle managed to prevent any further damage after the bases were full with no outs with a strike out, and two fly outs to end the inning.
Marren was active once again in singling home Evan Madigan in the fifth for one insurance run before Madigan knocked in an RBI himself that scored freshman Jake Wortman for a 5-3 lead after six innings in the seven-inning contest.
Tuttle was replaced by freshman Will Greer in the top of the fourth with two outs, and the freshman cruised through the next two innings in keeping the Hawks off the board. Greer was then replaced by fellow freshman Chris Difiore with one out in the top of the seventh after the Hawks had two men on with one out in the inning having just scored from a sac fly. Difiore managed a fielder's choice for one out in the inning, before a bunt single pulled the Hawks within one. However, the Bison managed to hang on for a one-run win after Difiore stepped on first for a 3-1 putout to end the game.
Tuttle earned the win after pitching 3.2 innings while allowing two runs and striking out four. Greer also struck out three batters in 2.2 innings of work, while Difiore earned the save in his first career appearance for the Orange and Blue. Madigan was 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI, while Jake Wortman also added two hits in three at-bats. Eunsang Yu provided another timely RBI hit in as many days, and led all Bison with two RBIs overall.
The Bison will finish off their games in North Carolina with a 10 a.m. contest against NJIT.
