Bucknell Baseball Downed by NJIT in Extra Innings on Sunday

CARY, N.C. – The Bucknell University baseball team rallied with a three-run eighth inning to tie the game at five, but NJIT hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the tenth inning as the Highlanders took an 8-5 win over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon.
Evan Madigan delivered a big two-RBI double to left field to tie the game at five after a wild pitch scored Eunsang Yu to pull Bucknell within two in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Bison couldn't rally in the bottom of the tenth after the Hawks took the lead.
Bucknell falls to 1-3 this season, and will face the Highlanders again for a four-game home series scheduled for Feb. 28 – March 1. Sunday's matchup was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The Bison started the game well. Peter Marren singled down the left field line to score Evan Madigan, before Chris Cannizzaro used a sac fly to center to score JohnPaul Bell for a 2-0 lead.
NJIT scored a run each in the fourth and the fifth in tying the game at two after five. The Highlanders then took a 4-2 lead with one out and , but Matt Ottsen came into the game as a reliever and induced a 6-3 double play to end the inning and prevent further damage.
The Highlanders added one more insurance run in the eighth to take a 5-2 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.
Bucknell used an impressive bottom of the eighth, all with two outs, in battling back and scoring three runs in the frame. Three straight walks from Eunsang Yu, Alex Baumann, and Brendan Lowery loaded the bases, before a wild pitch allowed Yu to score from third.
Madigan then stepped up and drove a double to left field to score Lowery and Baumann as Bucknell battled back to tie once again.
Neither team could manage a run in the ninth, and freshman Anthony Casciola retired all three batters he faced in the inning after replacing Ottsen to start the frame.
The Hawks broke the tie in the tenth, as Nick Hussey hit a home run over the left field fence to give the Hawks an 8-5 lead. The Bison managed two runners on in the bottom of the frame, but couldn't put any across home plate as they fell by the same score.
Madigan finished 3-for-5 on the day, and had a solid weekend overall in going 6-for-15 from the plate with three RBIs. Freshman Tyler Rigot made his first career start on the day, going five innings while allowing four hits and one earned run. The native of Charlotte, N.C. also delivered five strikeouts in a solid collegiate debut. Tyler WIncig finished 2-for-4 from the plate with a walk as the Bison managed nine hits overall.
Bucknell will now look ahead to a four-game series at Virginia beginning on Friday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m.
